MONDAY 1/30/2017 (04-11) #1862

Read: Mark 4:21-41, 1 Cor 8, Psa 81, Josh 24

Mark 4:22 (GW) 22  There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed. There is nothing kept secret that will not come to light.

Mark 4:24-25 (GW) 24  He went on to say, “Pay attention to what you're listening to! {Knowledge} will be measured out to you by the measure {of attention} you give. This is the way knowledge increases. 25  Those who understand {these mysteries} will be given {more knowledge}. However, some people don't understand {these mysteries}. Even what they understand will be taken away from them.”

PRAYER: May the people of our church want to hear YOUR Word on weekends and read YOUR Word on the weekdays.

Mark 4:27,31-32 (GW) 27  He sleeps at night and is awake during the day. The seeds sprout and grow, although the man doesn't know how.   31  It's like a mustard seed planted in the ground. The mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds on earth. 32  However, when planted, it comes up and becomes taller than all the garden plants. It grows such large branches that birds can nest in its shade.”

PRAYER: I will be a seed sower for YOU.

Mark 4:39,41-40 (GW) 39  Then he got up, ordered the wind to stop, and said to the sea, “Be still, absolutely still!” The wind stopped blowing, and the sea became very calm. … 40  He asked them, “Why are you such cowards? Don't you have any faith yet?” 41  They were overcome with fear and asked each other, “Who is this man? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

PRAYER: Why am I always so mystified by the miracles YOU perform.  Please be my storm stiller.

1 Corinthians 8:1 (GW) 1  Now, concerning food offered to false gods: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes people arrogant, but love builds them up.

PRAYER: I’m not going to stop increasing my knowledge, I’m going to ramp up my love.

1 Corinthians 8:6 (GW) 6  But for us, “There is only one God, the Father. Everything came from him, and we live for him. There is only one Lord, Jesus Christ. Everything came into being through him, and we live because of him.”

PRAYER: I am made by YOU, for YOU.

1 Corinthians 8:9 (GW) 9  But be careful that by using your freedom you don't somehow make a believer who is weak in faith fall into sin.

PRAYER: Help me to be sensitive and patient with those whose faith is weaker.

Psalm 81:1 (GW) 1  Sing joyfully to God, our strength. Shout happily to the God of Jacob.

PRAYER: May next weekend’s worship be loud and clear for YOU.

Psalm 81:10 (GW) 10  I am the LORD your God, the one who brought you out of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

PRAYER: I trust YOU to not only fill it with food I can enjoy but also words of life I can share with others.

Psalm 81:12-13 (GW) 12  So I let them go their own stubborn ways and follow their own advice. 13  If only my people would listen to me! If only Israel would follow me!

PRAYER: I am listening, I will follow.  I pray for the church to return to listening and following as well.

Joshua 24:13 (GW) 13  So I gave you a land that you hadn't farmed, cities to live in that you hadn't built, vineyards and olive groves that you hadn't planted. So you ate all you wanted!

PRAYER: YOU’re right, YOU’ve spoiled me.  I do appreciate everything.  Thank YOU!

Joshua 24:14-15,23 (GW) 14  “Fear the LORD, and serve him with integrity and faithfulness. Get rid of the gods your ancestors served on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve only the LORD. 15  But if you don't want to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Even if you choose the gods your ancestors served on the other side of the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live, my family and I will still serve the LORD.”… 23  “Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you. Turn yourselves entirely over to the LORD God of Israel.”

PRAYER: I choose YOU, wholly and completely. Help me to get rid of anything that interferes with that relationship.

DEVOTION: the real Jesus follower empties out the world in their life and fills it back up with knowledge (from God’s Word) empowered by Love (to actions that build people and bless the Lord).

TUESDAY 1/31/2017

Read: Mark 5:1-20, 1 Cor 9:1-12, Psa 82, Judg 1-3

Mark 5:15-17 (GW) 15  They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. The man was sitting there dressed and in his right mind. The people were frightened. 16  Those who saw this told what had happened to the demon-possessed man and the pigs. 17  Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their territory.

PRAYER: I realize that not everyone likes YOUR healing hand.  That won’t stop me from sharing my faith.

Mark 5:19 (GW) 19  But Jesus would not allow it. Instead, he told the man, “Go home to your family, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been to you.”

PRAYER: I get it. Witnessing begins at home.

1 Corinthians 9:7,9,10 (GW) 7  Does a soldier ever serve in the army at his own expense? Does anyone plant a vineyard and not eat the grapes? Does anyone take care of a flock and not drink milk from the sheep?... 9  Moses' Teachings say, “Never muzzle an ox when it is threshing grain.” God's concern isn't for oxen. 10  Isn't he speaking entirely for our benefit? This was written for our benefit so that the person who plows or threshes should expect to receive a share of the crop.

PRAYER: May all Bible believing churches generously support their ministry staff.

Psalm 82:3-4 (GW) 3  Defend weak people and orphans. Protect the rights of the oppressed and the poor. 4  Rescue weak and needy people. Help them escape the power of wicked people.

PRAYER: I can do better with this can’t I?!!  I can be more generous with my time and money.  May the church be YOUR hands and feet in reaching these people.

Judges 2:2 (GW) 2  You must never make a treaty with the people who live in this land. You must tear down their altars.' But you didn't obey me. What do you think you're doing?

NOTE: this isn’t about being disagreeable, this is about protecting one’s faith and focus.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to be more influential over my worldly neighbors than they are of me.

Judges 2:10-12,19 (GW) 10  That whole generation had joined their ancestors in death. So another generation grew up after them. They had no personal experience with the LORD or with what he had done for Israel. 11  The people of Israel did what the LORD considered evil. They began to serve other gods—the Baals. 12  The Israelites abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors, …. They followed the other gods of the people around them. … 19  But after each judge died, the people went back to their old ways and acted more corruptly than their parents. They followed, served, and worshiped other gods. They never gave up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

PRAYER: Bless children’s Ministry volunteers and workers, bless our disciple makers.  May our church do better at preparing the next generation to stand strong in the faith.

WEDNESDAY 2/1/2017

Read: Mark 5:21-43, 1 Cor 9:13-27, Psa 83, Judg 4-5

Mark 5:34 (GW) 34  Jesus told her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace! Be cured from your illness.”

NOTE: that person had a “go get it” attitude, and God blessed it.

PRAYER: I can be bolder in my faith, can’t I?!!!

Mark 5:35-36,39,41-42 (GW) 35  …They told the synagogue leader, “Your daughter has died. Why bother the teacher anymore?” 36  When Jesus overheard what they said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don't be afraid! Just believe.” … 39  … The child isn't dead. She's just sleeping.” … 41  Jesus took the child's hand and said to her, “Talitha, koum!” which means, “Little girl, I'm telling you to get up!” 42  The girl got up at once and started to walk. (She was twelve years old.) They were astonished.

PRAYER: Nothing is too impossible for YOU.  Why do I doubt?!  Why worry?!!  Forgive me, Lord.  I trust in YOU!

1 Corinthians 9:16,18 (GW) 16  If I spread the Good News, … I have an obligation to do this. How horrible it will be for me if I don't spread the Good News!... 18  So what is my reward? It is to spread the Good News free of charge. ….

PRAYER: I don’t want anyone to not be in heaven.  Show me whom I can talk to , then grant me the words and the boldness to share my faith.

1 Corinthians 9:19-20,22-23 (GW) 19  Although I'm free from all people, I have made myself a slave for all people to win more of them. 20  I became Jewish for Jewish people. … 22  I became like a person weak in faith to win those who are weak in faith. I have become everything to everyone in order to save at least some of them. 23  I do all this for the sake of the Good News in order to share what it offers.

PRAYER: Show me how I can relate to non-Christians in order to share with them my faith.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (GW) 24  .. everyone who runs in a race runs to win, … Run like them, so that you can win. 25  Everyone who enters an athletic contest goes into strict training.26  So I run—but not without a clear goal ahead of me. So I box—…. 27  Rather, I toughen my body with punches and make it my slave so that I will not be disqualified after I have spread the Good News to others.

PRAYER: I don’t mind a little discipline and hard work.  I want to WIN as many people to YOU, Jesus, as I can.

Psalm 83:18 (GW) 18  so that they must acknowledge you. Your name is the LORD. You alone are the Most High God of the whole earth.

PRAYER: YOU are the one, the Most High, the center of my universe, the center of THE universe.

Judges 4:1 (GW) 1  After Ehud died, the people of Israel again did what the LORD considered evil.

PRAYER: May our leaders remain strong, but quickly replace those who no longer lead us. May we hold the course (of faith).

Judges 4:9,21 (GW) 9  Deborah replied, “Certainly, I'll go with you. But you won't win any honors for the way you're going about this, because the LORD will use a woman to defeat Sisera.”… 21  When Sisera had fallen sound asleep from exhaustion, Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and walked quietly toward him with a hammer in her hand. She hammered the tent peg through his temples into the ground. So Sisera died.

Judges 5:12 (GW) 12  Get up! Get up, Deborah! Get up! Get up and create a song! Barak, attack! Take your prisoners, son of Abinoam.

Judges 5:24 (GW) 24  Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite, should be the most blessed woman, the most blessed woman living in a tent.

NOTE: Women rock, even in the Old Testament.  Who was first to see the risen Christ?  Women.  Who were the majority of small group hosts in the New Testament? Women!

PRAYER: May the ladies of our church feel the freedom to exercise whatever gifts and leadership skills YOU have blessed them with.

Judges 4:14,24 (GW) 14  Then Deborah said to Barak, “Attack! This is the day the LORD will hand Sisera over to you. The LORD will go ahead of you.. 24  The Israelites became stronger and stronger until they destroyed him.

PRAYER: YOU are bigger than any problem I’ve ever faced.

Judges 5:9 (GW) 9  My heart goes out to Israel's commanders, to those people who volunteered. Praise the LORD!

PRAYER: Do bless the many volunteers at church. Wow!!!  Great bunch!!

Judges 5:31 (GW) 31  …. But may those who love the LORD be like the sun when it rises in all its brightness. So the land had peace for 40 years.

PRAYER: May I and all my brothers and sisters in Christ shine bright for YOU this week.

DEVOTION: Jesus followers serve the God of the impossible.  They are bold, they share their faith with the expectation than one more is going to be in heaven because of “me”.  Take a moment to lift up your un-churched/un-saved friends.

THURSDAY 2/2/2017

Read: Mark 6:1-13, 1 Cor 10:1-13, Psa 84, Judg 6-7

Mark 6:2-6 (GW) 2  …. He amazed many who heard him. They asked, “Where did this man get these ideas? … 3  Isn't this the carpenter, … So they took offense at him. 4  But Jesus told them, “The only place a prophet isn't honored is in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house.” 5  He couldn't work any miracles there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and cure them. 6  Their unbelief amazed him. ….

PRAYER: How odd it must be when we small human beings actually deny YOU.  Forgive me the many foolish times I have chosen to not believe.

Mark 6:7,12-13 (GW) 7  He called the twelve apostles, sent them out two by two, and gave them authority over evil spirits. … 12  So the apostles went and told people that they should turn to God and change the way they think and act. 13  They also forced many demons out of people and poured oil on many who were sick to cure them.

PRAYER: May we be bolder in witnessing for YOU and helping people to become truly free.

1 Corinthians 10:2 (GW) 2  They were all united with Moses by baptism in the cloud and in the sea.

NOTE: this baptism was by sprinkling. The Egyptians got a baptized by immersion, kinda.

1 Corinthians 10:9-10 (GW) 9  We shouldn't put the Lord to the test as some of them did. They were killed by snakes. 10  Don't complain as some of them did. The angel of death destroyed them.

PRAYER: No more whining from me.

1 Corinthians 10:12 (GW) 12  So, people who think they are standing firmly should be careful that they don't fall.

PRAYER: I know, my pride sometimes turns to arrogance and then oops!

1 Corinthians 10:13 (GW) 13  There isn't any temptation that you have experienced which is unusual for humans. God, who faithfully keeps his promises, will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist. But when you are tempted, he will also give you the ability to endure the temptation as your way of escape.

PRAYER: No excuses, right!  I can make it through anything, …with YOUR help.

Psalm 84:4-5 (GW) 4  Blessed are those who live in your house. They are always praising you. Selah 5  Blessed are those who find strength in you. Their hearts are on the road {that leads to you}.

PRAYER: May YOUR house be filled with praise and appreciation this coming weekend.

Psalm 84:11-12 (GW) 11  The LORD God is a sun and shield. The LORD grants favor and honor. He does not hold back any blessing from those who live innocently. 12  O LORD of Armies, blessed is the person who trusts you.

PRAYER: I will be a person of integrity and whole hearted faithfulness.

Judges 6:1 (GW) 1  The people of Israel did what the LORD considered evil. So the LORD handed them over to Midian for seven years.

NOTE: eight times the Bible says they again “did evil”. We just don’t learn do we?

PRAYER: Lord, forgive me for the many times I get off YOUR path.

Judges 6:7-8 (GW) 7  When the people of Israel cried out to the LORD for help because of what the Midianites had done to them, 8  the LORD sent a prophet to them. He said, “This is what the LORD God of Israel says: I brought you out of Egypt. I took you away from slavery.

NOTE: seven times the Bible says they would cry out to the Lord. Again, we just don’t learn do we?

PRAYER: Lord, since we are so stubborn and dull of mind, keep sending us teachers and prophet who can guide us back to YOUR Word and Will.

Judges 6:12,14,34 (GW) 12  The Messenger of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said, “The LORD is with you, brave man.” … 14  The LORD turned to him and said, “You will rescue Israel from Midian with the strength you have. I am sending you.” … 34  Then the LORD'S Spirit gave Gideon strength. So Gideon blew the ram's horn to summon Abiezer's family to follow him.

PRAYER: I choose to be brave.  I will “go therefore into all the world” with your Good News.

Judges 6:15-16 (GW) 15  Gideon said to him, “Excuse me, sir! How can I rescue Israel? Look at my whole family. It's the weakest one in Manasseh. And me? I'm the least important member of my family.” 16  The LORD replied, “I will be with you. You will defeat Midian as if it were {only} one man.”

PRAYER: No Excuses, right?!

Judges 7:2 (GW) 2  The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men with you for me to hand Midian over to you. Israel might brag and say, ‘We saved ourselves.'

NOTE: what would you do for God if you knew you couldn’t fail?

PRAYER: Lord, may all believers believe and act as though YOU are the God of the impossible

Judges 7:3,5-6,16,20-22 (GW) 3   …scared or frightened should leave … So 22,000 men went back home, and 10,000 were left. … 5  … “Separate those who lap water with their tongues like dogs from those who kneel down to drink.” 6  Three hundred …. 16  Gideon divided the 300 men into three companies. He gave them each rams' horns and jars with torches inside…. 20  The three companies also blew their rams' horns and broke their jars. …They shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!” 21  While each man kept his position …. 22  The 300 men kept on blowing their rams' horns, and the LORD caused the whole camp of Midian to fight among themselves. …..

NOTE: We don’t need funds nor numbers nor talent to accomplish the impossible. We need to hear God’s call and we just need faith.

PRAYER: Lord, I can be braver.  Speak to me.  Speak to our church about next steps in winning the world to YOU.

DEVOTION: Jesus followers in small numbers can have a huge effect on the world around them, given faith.

FRIDAY 2/3/2017

Read: Mark 6:14-29, 1 Cor 10:14-33, Psa 85, Judg 8

Mark 6:20,26-27 (GW) 20  because Herod was afraid of John. Herod knew that John was a fair and holy man, so he protected him. When he listened to John, he would become very disturbed, and yet he liked to listen to him. … 26  The king deeply regretted his promise. …. 27  Immediately, the king sent a guard and ordered him to bring John's head. ….

PRAYER: I understand that not everyone I witness to is going to treat me good.  But if YOU wouldn’t mind, lead me to those who will.  But whatever YOUR will – is fine!

1 Corinthians 10:14-15,21 (GW) 14  …, get as far away from the worship of false gods as you can. 15  I'm talking to intelligent people. … 21  You cannot drink the Lord's cup and the cup of demons. You cannot participate at the table of the Lord and at the table of demons.

PRAYER: Help me to clean up my life.

1 Corinthians 10:23 (GW) 23  Someone may say, “I'm allowed to do anything,” but not everything is helpful. I'm allowed to do anything, but not everything encourages growth.

PRAYER: Grant me the wisdom to know what helps and what hinders.  I want to grow spiritually in YOU.

1 Corinthians 10:24 (GW) 24  People should be concerned about others and not just about themselves

PRAYER: I will be more sensitive to others.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (GW) 31  So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God.

PRAYER: I am made by YOU and for YOU.

1 Corinthians 10:32-33 (GW) 32  Don't cause others to stumble, whether they are Jewish, Greek, or members of God's church. 33  I try to please everyone in every way. I don't think about what would be good for me but about what would be good for many people so that they might be saved.

PRAYER: Lead me to whomever YOU’d have me share my faith (and YOUR love) with.

Psalm 85:7-9 (GW) 7  Show us your mercy, O LORD, by giving us your salvation. 8  I want to hear what God the LORD says, because he promises peace to his people, to his godly ones. But they must not go back to their stupidity. 9  Indeed, his salvation is near those who fear him, and {his} glory will remain in our land.

PRAYER: YOU are my Savior and YOU are my master whom I choose to follow.

Psalm 85:12-13 (GW) 12  The LORD will certainly give us what is good, and our land will produce crops. 13  Righteousness will go ahead of him and make a path for his steps.

PRAYER: My may life bare evidence of fruitful and righteous living.

Judges 8:23 (GW) 23  Gideon replied, “I will not rule you nor will my son. The LORD will rule you.”

PRAYER: I lift up our churches leaders.  May they recognize and submit to YOUR Lordship as well as I.

Judges 8:33-35 (GW) 33  As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel chased after other gods—…. 34  The Israelites did not remember the LORD their God, who had rescued them from all the enemies around them. 35  And they were not kind to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) despite all the good he had done for Israel.

PRAYER: That is just sad.  But I know that I have gone from being blessed to being conceited, from being enriched to being greedy, from being forgiven to be unforgiving.  Forgive me Lord.

DEVOTION: the real disciple is single minded devoted to God and to winning the lost.
