Mark 6:32 (GW) 32  So they went away in a boat to a place where they could be alone.

PRAYER: I appreciate my “alone” time with YOU.

Mark 6:34 (GW) 34  When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd and felt sorry for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. So he spent a lot of time teaching them.

PRAYER: May our church rebuild compassion for discipling the lost

Mark 6:37-38,43-44 (GW) 37  Jesus replied, “You give them something to eat.” …” 38  He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? … they told him, “Five loaves of bread and two fish.” … 43  When they picked up the leftover pieces, they filled twelve baskets with bread and fish. 44  There were 5,000 men who had eaten the bread.

NOTE: We are God’s solution to world hunger

PRAYER: Lord, inspire us to give in the direction of the need YOU would have us to meet.

Mark 6:39 (GW) 39  Then he ordered all of them to sit down in groups on the green grass.

PRAYER: YOU’re always relational aren’t YOU?!

1 Corinthians 11:8-9,11 (GW) 8  Clearly, man wasn't made from woman but woman from man. 9  Man wasn't created for woman but woman for man….  11  Yet, as believers in the Lord, women couldn't exist without men and men couldn't exist without women.

NOTE: Before you think Paul is prejudiced or a chauvinist check out Gal. 3:28

PRAYER: Lord, we need each other don’t we!?!!

Psalm 86:4-7 (GW) 4  Give me joy, O Lord, because I lift my soul to you. 5  You, O Lord, are good and forgiving, full of mercy toward everyone who calls out to you. 6  Open your ears to my prayer, O LORD. Pay attention when I plead for mercy. 7  When I am in trouble, I call out to you because you answer me.

PRAYER: YOU are never too busy for me, and YOU’re never too good to help a trouble soul like me.  I guess I should be that way with other, huh?!!

Psalm 86:11 (GW) 11  Teach me your way, O LORD, so that I may live in your truth. Focus my heart on fearing you.

PRAYER: With deep respect, I long for YOUR guidance and wisdom.

Psalm 86:15 (GW) 15  But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and merciful God. You are patient, always faithful and ready to forgive.

PRAYER: As deeply appreciative as I am for this unmerited favor, I pray for the where-with-all to do for others what YOU have done unto me.

Judges 9:4 (GW) 4  So they gave him 70 pieces of silver from the temple of Baal Berith. With the silver, Abimelech hired worthless and reckless men to follow him.

NOTE: Just because you have money and many fans doesn’t mean you are on God’s path.

PRAYER: Lord, help me be wise.  Let me unmoved by neither the jeers nor cheers.  But may I draw my contentment from following YOU.

DEVOTION: While God remains merciful and gracious, that doesn’t mean that He loosens His standards for His followers. In many ways that simply raise the bar for us disciples.

TUESDAY 2/7/2017

Read: Mark 6:45-56, 1 Cor 11:17-34, Psa 87, Judg 10-12

Mark 6:51 (GW) 51  He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped blowing. The disciples were astounded.

PRAYER: I love the fact that even though YOU can walk on water YOU choose to be in our boat.  Cool!

Mark 6:55 (GW) 55  They ran all over the countryside and began to carry the sick on cots to any place where they heard he was.

NOTE: It just seems like many churches in America prefer healthy visitors instead sick and lost.

PRAYER: Lord, prepare our church to be a hospital for the hurting instead of a shrine for the saints.

1 Corinthians 11:17-18,20 (GW) 17  I have no praise for you …: When you gather, it results in more harm than good. 18  In the first place, I hear that when you gather as a church you split up into opposing groups. ….  20  When you gather in the same place, you can't possibly be eating the Lord's Supper.

PRAYER: Forgive us for our division and disunity.  Heal the Body (of Christ), help us to come together under YOU the Head of the Body.

1 Corinthians 11:24-25 (GW) 24  and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving. He broke the bread and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” 25  When supper was over, he did the same with the cup. He said, “This cup is the new promise made with my blood. Every time you drink from it, do it to remember me.”

PRAYER: I don’t need bread nor wine to remember YOU, but I am grateful for those moments we celebrate YOUR sacrifice together.

1 Corinthians 11:29-30 (GW) 29  Anyone who eats and drinks is eating and drinking a judgment against himself when he doesn't recognize the Lord's body. 30  This is the reason why many of you are weak and sick and quite a number {of you} have died.

NOTE: This may be why many church who mindlessly serve the Eucharist find themselves in constant trouble.

PRAYER: Lord, when we do receive communion – may YOU be the focus and may we be united.

Psalm 87:7 (GW) 7  Singers and dancers will sing, “Zion is the source of all our blessings.”

PRAYER: Dancers?!! Cool.  May YOU, at the very least, get some great singers this coming weekend.

Judges 10:6,13,16 (GW) 6  The people of Israel again did what the LORD considered evil. They began to serve other gods  13  But you still abandoned me and served other gods. That's why I won't rescue you again. … 16  Then they got rid of the foreign gods they had and served the LORD. So the LORD could not bear to have Israel suffer any longer.

PRAYER: Forgive me the times I’ve abandoned YOU.

Judges 11:1,3,29 (GW) 1   Jephthah's … mother was a prostitute. … 3  Jephthah fled from his brothers. …. Worthless men gathered around Jephthah and went out {on raids} with him. … 29  Then the LORD'S Spirit came over Jephthah. ….

PRAYER: There is no telling whom YOU will use.  I’ll try to keep an open mind.

Judges 12:1 (GW) 1  The men of Ephraim were summoned to fight. They crossed {the Jordan River} to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, “Why did you fight against Ammon without inviting us to go with you? Now we're going to burn your house down with you in it.”

NOTE: Sometimes people in other churches forget that we are in this together, and they come up with some of the most ridiculous reasons to be divided with each other.

PRAYER: Lord, help the church to be wise and united against the real enemy, Satan.

DEVOTION: the real believer willfully chooses to be unified with even the most unusual of Jesus followers (tax collectors and the like).

WEDNESDAY 2/8/2017

Read: Mark 7:1-23, 1 Cor 12:1-13, Psa 88, Judg 13-15

Mark 7:6 (GW) 6  Jesus told them, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites in Scripture: These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

PRAYER: I, for sure, don’t want to be THAT GUY!

Mark 7:7 (GW) 7  Their worship of me is pointless, ….'

PRAYER: May YOU get the worship YOU deserve this weekend.

Mark 7:15-16 (GW) 15  Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It's what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. 16  Let the person who has ears listen!”

PRAYER: I know that my mouth can either be quieter or nicer than it’s been.

Mark 7:21-23 (GW) 21  Evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, 22  adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person. 23  All these evils come from within and make a person unclean.”

NOTE: take a look at what envy, greed, and foolishness is listed alongside of.

PRAYER: Lord, I need YOUR help cleaning up all aspects of my life.

1 Corinthians 12:3 (GW) 3  So I want you to know that no one speaking by God's Spirit says, “Jesus is cursed.” No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:5-7 (GW) 5  There are different ways of serving, and yet the same Lord is served. 6  There are different types of work to do, but the same God produces every gift in every person. 7  The evidence of the Spirit's presence is given to each person for the common good of everyone.

PRAYER: Bless the diversity of the church.  Help us to really be about the common good of everyone.

1 Corinthians 12:12 (GW) 12  For example, the body is one unit and yet has many parts. As all the parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

PRAYER: May we be as one.  YOU be the head, we’ll work together and give YOU some hands and feet to help get things done.

1 Corinthians 12:13 (GW) 13  By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether we are Jewish or Greek, slave or free, God gave all of us one Spirit to drink.

Psalm 88:11 (GW) 11  Will anyone tell about your mercy in Sheol or about your faithfulness in Abaddon?

PRAYER: I realize that if I don’t talk about YOU to others now, it will be too late.  Grant me boldness to share this week.  Point me in the direction of those YOU’d have me talk to about YOU.

Judges 13:1 (GW) 1  The people of Israel again did what the LORD considered evil. So the LORD handed them over to the Philistines for 40 years.

PRAYER: How frustrating we must be to YOU.  It is hard to understand how YOU love us so.

Judges 15:15 (GW) 15  Samson found the jawbone from a donkey that had just died. He picked it up and killed 1,000 men with it.

PRAYER: I know that YOU can grant amazing victories using the most unusual and smallest things.

Judges 15:18-19 (GW) 18  Samson was very thirsty. So he called out to the LORD and said, “You have given me this great victory. But now I'll die from thirst and fall into the power of godless men.” 19  So God split open the hollow place at Lehi, and water gushed out. Samson drank some water. Then he was refreshed and revived. So he called the place En Hakkore [Spring of the One Who Calls Out]. It is still there at Lehi today.

PRAYER: I will trust in YOUR provisional hand in my life.

DEVOTION: the value of the church is that believers, like Samson, aren’t perfect.  We need people to help balance us out.

THURSDAY 2/9/2017

Read: Mark 7:24-37, 1 Cor 12:14-31, Psa 89:1-18, Judg 16

Mark 7:27-28 (GW) 27  Jesus said to her, “First, let the children eat all they want. It's not right to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs.” 28  She answered him, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat some of the children's scraps.”

PRAYER: I think YOU sometimes withhold YOUR hand just to see if I’ll step up in faith.  I don’t like that, but I understand I’ve got to meet YOU part way.

Mark 7:33 (GW) 33  Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. He put his fingers into the man's ears, and after spitting, he touched the man's tongue.

PRAYER: I love how personal and even private YOU are with us.

Mark 7:34,37 (GW) 34  Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and said to the man, “Ephphatha!” which means, “Be opened!”… 37  Jesus completely amazed the people. They said, “He has done everything well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute talk.”

PRAYER: YOU’ve made me to hear better and speak more boldly.  May the church be filled with deaf mutes who experience the power of YOUR Holy Presence.

1 Corinthians 12:18-19 (GW) 18  So God put each and every part of the body together as he wanted it. 19  How could it be a body if it only had one part?

PRAYER: So even though I don’t get some of the other parts, I submit to YOUR divine plan to put us all together to work for YOUR glory.

1 Corinthians 12:25-26 (GW) 25  God's purpose was that the body should not be divided but rather that all of its parts should feel the same concern for each other. 26  If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts share its suffering. If one part is praised, all the others share in its happiness.

PRAYER: May we, in all our diversity, share both ups and downs as one body.  Lord, heal the divided fellowships that are out there.

Psalm 89:1,15 (GW) 1  I will sing forever about the evidence of your mercy, O LORD. I will tell about your faithfulness to every generation. 15  Blessed are the people who know how to praise you. They walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.

PRAYER: I will be loud about YOU and for YOU to any and all I meet.

Psalm 89:11 (GW) 11  The heavens are yours. The earth is also yours. You made the world and everything in it.

PRAYER: Forgive me for the many times I forget that none of it is mine.  I appreciate all YOU let me enjoy.

Psalm 89:16-17 (GW) 16  They find joy in your name all day long. They are joyful in your righteousness 17  because you are the glory of their strength. By your favor you give us victory.

PRAYER: May the true believer shine for YOU.

Judges 16:16-17 (GW) 16  Every day she made his life miserable with her questions. She pestered him until he wished he were dead. 17  Finally, he told her the truth. He told her, “Because I'm a Nazirite, no one has ever cut the hair on my head. I was dedicated to God before I was born. If my hair is ever shaved off, my strength will leave me. Then I'll be like any other man.”

NOTE: How often have we been lulled into doing or saying something dumb?

PRAYER: Lord, the secret of my strength is no in my hair but in YOUR Word. Thank YOU for the plentiful and daily supply of it.

DEVOTION: God uses the most unusual people to bring Him honor (like a lowly woman from the other side of the tracts, or even an over sexed weight lifter).  The believer’s place is to celebrate the diversity, and loudly declare God’s Glory.

FRIDAY 2/10/2017

Read: Mark 8:1-13, 1 Cor 13, Psa 89:19-52, Judg 17-18

Mark 8:2 (GW) 2  “I feel sorry for the people. They have been with me three days now and have nothing to eat.

NOTE: Imagine going to church to listen to preaching for three days without food.  There had to be some good messages – or – the people were more hungry for the Word than food.

PRAYER: Lord, may YOUR people be so hungry for YOUR Word this weekend they forget about eating food.

Mark 8:8-9 (GW) 8  The people ate as much as they wanted. The disciples picked up the leftover pieces and filled seven large baskets. 9  About four thousand people were there. Then he sent the people on their way.

PRAYER: I realize I can’t just come to YOUR Holy buffet and stay.  Once I’m fed I’m ready to go do it, right?!

Mark 8:10 (GW) 10  After that, Jesus and his disciples got into a boat and went into the region of Dalmanutha.

PRAYER: So it’s biblical to boat after the worship service, right?!!

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (GW) 1  I may speak in the languages of humans and of angels. But if I don't have love, I am a loud gong or a clashing cymbal. 2  I may have the gift to speak what God has revealed, and I may understand all mysteries and have all knowledge. I may even have enough faith to move mountains. But if I don't have love, I am nothing. 3  I may even give away all that I have and give up my body to be burned. But if I don't have love, none of these things will help me.

PRAYER: Love, love, love, I got it. It’s about love, YOUR love flowing through me.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (GW) 4  Love is patient. … kind. … isn't jealous. … doesn't sing its own praises. … isn't arrogant. 5  … isn't rude. … doesn't think about itself. … isn't irritable. … doesn't keep track of wrongs. 6  … isn't happy when injustice is done, … is happy with the truth. 7  Love never stops being patient, never stops believing, never stops hoping, never gives up. 8  Love never comes to an end. ….

PRAYER: Gulp,  I can to that.  And I will not quit.

1 Corinthians 13:11-12 (GW) 11  When I was a child, I spoke like a child, thought like a child, and reasoned like a child. When I became an adult, I no longer used childish ways. 12  Now we see a blurred image in a mirror. Then we will see very clearly. Now my knowledge is incomplete. Then I will have complete knowledge as God has complete knowledge of me.

1 Corinthians 13:13 (GW) 13  So these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the best one of these is love.

Psalm 89:19,21,24,45,51 (GW) 19  Once in a vision you said to your faithful ones: I set a boy above warriors. I have raised up one chosen from the people. 21  My hand is ready to help him. My arm will also give him strength. 24  My faithfulness and mercy will be with him, and in my name he will be victorious. 45  You cut short the days of his youth and covered him with shame. 51  Your enemies insulted {me}. They insulted your Messiah every step he took.

NOTE: God will use whom He will use. But it doesn’t always end well.  God sent a baby who would die on a cross.

PRAYER: Lord, I’ll try to judge who YOU’ll use nor what happens to them.

Judges 17:6 (GW) 6  In those days Israel didn't have a king. Everyone did whatever he considered right.

PRAYER: I know, there is a way that seems right but in the end it leads to death.

Judges 18:27 (GW) 27  The people of Dan took what Micah had made and the man who had become his priest and went to the city of Laish. They attacked a peaceful and secure people, killed them all with swords, and burned their city.

NOTE: Just because you have a religious building or stuff or priests – doesn’t necessarily make YOU God honoring disciples.

PRAYER: Lord, save us from our own hypocrisy. May we truly honor YOU in every way.

DEVOTION: Strengthened by God’s Word and motivated by love (real love) – Jesus followers could do just about anything.
