Power Passages & Prayer!

If you use this weekly guide  - you'll cover all of the Bible in just 300 days.   This is sort of a "Cliff Notes" version of the reading plan that Pastor John uses.  But it's more than just learning stuff.  This helps you to communicate with God.  You'll hear Him, and He will hear you..

MONDAY 2/13/2017

Read: Mark 8:14-21, 1 Cor 14:1-25, Psa 90, Judg 19

Mark 8:15 (GW) 15  Jesus warned them, “Be careful! Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”

PRAYER: I  will be alert to the lure of worldliness, self-centeredness, and pride.  I will be in the world but not of it.

1 Corinthians 14:1 (GW) 1  Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially the gift of speaking what God has revealed.

PRAYER: I’ll try to keep love at the forefront

1 Corinthians 14:12 (GW) 12  In the same way, since you're eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in them so that you help the church grow.

PRAYER: I’ll give you my best.

1 Corinthians 14:24-25 (GW) 24  Now suppose you speak what God has revealed. When unbelievers or outsiders come in you will show them where they are wrong and convince them that they are sinners. 25  The secrets in their hearts will become known, and in this way they will quickly bow with their faces touching the ground, worship God, and confess that God is truly among you.

NOTE: Evangelism isn’t all sunshine and roses. Sometimes it’s a flagrant revelation of lies so truth can prevail.

PRAYER: Lord, help the church to boldly speak truth to the unbelievers and outsiders (but with love of course).

Psalm 90:8 (GW) 8  You have set our sins in front of you. You have put our secret sins in the light of your presence.

PRAYER: If anyone is going to see that, I’d rather it be YOU.

Psalm 90:10,12 (GW) 10  Each of us lives for 70 years— or even 80 if we are in good health. But the best of them {bring} trouble and misery. Indeed, they are soon gone, and we fly away. 12  Teach us to number each of our days so that we may grow in wisdom.

PRAYER: For however many more days I might have before going home to YOU, help me make them meaningful.

Psalm 90:14 (GW) 14  Satisfy us every morning with your mercy so that we may sing joyfully and rejoice all our days.

PRAYER: YOUR grace makes all the difference in my day.

Psalm 90:17 (GW) 17  Let the kindness of the Lord our God be with us. Make us successful in everything we do. Yes, make us successful in everything we do.

PRAYER: May all that I  say and do bring honor to YOU.

Judges 19:29 (GW) 29  When he arrived home, he got a knife. He took his concubine and cut her limb from limb into 12 pieces. Then he sent the pieces throughout the territories of Israel.

NOTE: What an awful story. What hurts you, hurts all of us..

PRAYER: Lord, may the church be concerned for every member of it’s body, even the small and hidden ones.

Judges 19:30 (GW) 30  …. Think about it! Form a plan, and speak out!”

PRAYER: But don’t just sit there, right?!!

DEVOTION: sin lure is all around us. Complacency and pride, uncaring and self-promoting.  The Jesus believer won’t waste a day serving the Lord while still here on earth.

TUESDAY 2/14/2017

Read: Mark 8:22-30, 1 Cor 14:26-40, Psa 91, Judg 20-21

Mark 8:23 (GW) 23  Jesus took the blind man's hand and led him out of the village. He spit into the man's eyes and placed his hands on him. Jesus asked him, “Can you see anything?”

PRAYER: I love how sensitive and personal YOU are with us.

Mark 8:25 (GW) 25  Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes a second time, and the man saw clearly. His sight was normal again. He could see everything clearly even at a distance.

NOTE: Clearly it wasn’t Jesus’ faith that was lacking the first time.  Sometimes a person’s healing takes patience and time.

PRAYER: Lord, I will try to be more patient with other people’s spiritual progress, as YOU are so patient with me.

Mark 8:29 (GW) 29  He asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah!”

PRAYER: I realize that somedays I‘ve relegated YOU to the cleanup crew only, in my life.  Forgive me.  YOU are Lord and I reposition YOU in the center of my life.

1 Corinthians 14:32-33,40 (GW) 32  People who speak what God has revealed must control themselves. 33  God is not a God of disorder but a God of peace. As in all the churches of God's holy people, … 40  Everything must be done in a proper and orderly way.

PRAYER: Chaos is not YOUR thing, is it?!! Help the church to be organized without becoming legalistic.

1 Corinthians 14:35,39 (GW) 35  If they want to know anything they should ask their husbands at home. It's shameful for a woman to speak in church. 39  So, brothers and sisters, desire to speak what God has revealed, and don't keep anyone from speaking in other languages.

NOTE: So Paul says that women should be quiet, but then he says they should desire to speak.  Whaaaaa?!!! You This verse could single-handedly kill every church’s Sunday School, couldn’t it?!!  But Paul talked about women sharing in public in 1 Corinthians 11. He said, “28  There is neither … male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”  (Galatians 3:28 NIV).   There is much commentary on this subject – but my abbreviated understanding of this is  - women should not speak up their objections or concerns over their husbands prophecy. They should take that discussion home.

PRAYER: Lord, I believe YOU are a God of order and that YOU have high regard for the gifts that the men and women of our church share.   May we all honor YOU with whatever YOU give us to share.

Psalm 91:1,7-8 (GW) 1  Whoever lives under the shelter of the Most High will remain in the shadow of the Almighty. 7  They will not come near you, even though a thousand may fall dead beside you or ten thousand at your right side. 8  You only have to look with your eyes to see ….

PRAYER: Wow, may my heart learn to rest in YOU, because the benefits are huge!!!

Psalm 91:10-12 (GW) 10  No harm will come to you. No sickness will come near your house. 11  He will put his angels in charge of you to protect you in all your ways. 12  They will carry you in their hands so that you never hit your foot against a rock.

PRAYER: This is so cool. Thanks for the lift, for sure!!!

Psalm 91:15-16 (GW) 15  When you call to me, I will answer you. I will be with you when you are in trouble. I will save you and honor you. 16  I will satisfy you with a long life. I will show you how I will save you.

PRAYER: YOU do answer, YOU are my refuge, YOU lift me up when everyone else tries to put me down.

Judges 20:11,23 (GW) 11  So all the men of Israel assembled. They stood united against the city. …. 23  The Israelites went and cried in the presence of the LORD until evening. They asked the LORD, “Should we continue to wage war against our close relatives, the men of Benjamin?” The LORD answered, “Go fight them!”

NOTE: This fight was brother (Benjamin) against brother (all the other tribes).  Benjamin was very wrong, yet Israel would pay great costs in this battle. In the end the tribe of Benjamin would be all but snuffed out.  Nobody really wins when brother fights brother.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to win my wayward brothers back to the fold.  But know that I am willing to do whatever is necessary to maintain the integrity of the church.

Judges 21:15 (GW) 15  The congregation felt sorry for the people of Benjamin because the LORD had broken the unity of the tribes of Israel.

PRAYER: I pray for the unity of the divided church.  May we find a way to be one again.

Judges 21:25 (GW) 25  In those days Israel didn't have a king. Everyone did whatever he considered right.

NOTE: Reading the solutions to Benjamin’s dilemma sounds almost as awful as the sin that got them in trouble to start with.   But they were leaderless, weren’t they?!!.

PRAYER: Lord, forgive us for not letting YOU be Lord of our lives, nor Lord of YOUR own church. We are silly!

DEVOTION: The real Christian doesn’t see people healed the first time, or the church united every time.  But we trust God, follow His lead, and do what we are to do.

WEDNESDAY 2/15/2017

Read: Mark 8:31-38, 1 Cor 15:1-28, Psa 92, Ruth 1

Mark 8:31-32 (GW) 31   Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a lot. He taught them that he would be rejected by the leaders, the chief priests, and the scribes. He would be killed, but after three days he would come back to life. 32  He told them very clearly what he meant. Peter took him aside and objected to this.

PRAYER: YOU have always been clear, it’s just me. I sometimes miss the most obvious things.  Help me to clear my mind out so there is room for YOUR Word and revelations.

Mark 8:33 (GW) 33  Jesus turned, looked at his disciples, and objected to what Peter said. Jesus said, “Get out of my way, Satan! You aren't thinking the way God thinks but the way humans think.”

PRAYER: I’m guilty as charged. Forgive me.

Mark 8:34 (GW) 34   Then Jesus called the crowd to himself along with his disciples. He said to them, “Those who want to follow me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses, and follow me.

PRAYER: Much as I want so much, I want YOU more.  I choose to sacrifice my self-interests and follow YOU.

Mark 8:36 (GW) 36  What good does it do for people to win the whole world yet lose their lives?

1 Corinthians 15:2 (GW) 2  In addition, you are saved by this Good News IF you hold on to the doctrine I taught you, unless you believed it without thinking it over.

PRAYER: Lord, may our congregation be a Word centered group of learners.

1 Corinthians 15:10 (GW) 10  But God's kindness made me what I am, and that kindness was not wasted on me. Instead, I worked harder than all the others. It was not I who did it, but God's kindness was with me.

PRAYER: May YOUR kindness be not wasted on me either.

1 Corinthians 15:14,17 (GW) 14  If Christ hasn't come back to life, our message has no meaning and your faith also has no meaning…. 17  If Christ hasn't come back to life, your faith is worthless and sin still has you in its power.

QUOTE: The resurrection is central to our faith!

Psalm 92:4 (GW) 4  You made me find joy in what you have done, O LORD. I will sing joyfully about the works of your hands.

PRAYER: As self-destructive and slow witted as I can be – YOU remain faithful and good to me.  Thank YOU!!!

Psalm 92:10 (GW) 10  But you make me as strong as a wild bull, ….

PRAYER: I am able to do amazing things because of YOU

Psalm 92:13-14 (GW) 13  They are planted in the LORD'S house. They blossom in our God's courtyards. 14  Even when they are old, they still bear fruit. They are always healthy and fresh.

PRAYER: May we all be fruitful, and always.

Ruth 1:16 (GW) 16  But Ruth answered, “Don't force me to leave you. Don't make me turn back from following you. Wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.

PRAYER: I pray for all the families in our church to have this kind of love and firm connection with each other (and in YOU).

DEVOTION: the Jesus follower is a committed and self-less learner who is faithfully connected to other believers.

THURSDAY 2/16/2017

Read: Mark 9:1-13, 1 Cor 15:29-58, Psa 93, Ruth 2-3

Mark 9:7 (GW) 7  Then a cloud overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud and said, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

PRAYER: My ears and heart are open.

Mark 9:9-10 (GW) 9  On their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen. They were to wait until the Son of Man had come back to life. 10  They kept in mind what he said but argued among themselves what he meant by “come back to life.”

PRAYER: It’s good to know that I’m not the only one slow to understand YOUR Word.  Help unclog my ears, help me soften and prepare my heart to really hear YOU.

1 Corinthians 15:33-34 (GW) 33  Don't let anyone deceive you. Associating with bad people will ruin decent people. 34  Come back to the right point of view, and stop sinning. Some people don't know anything about God. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

PRAYER: May I be a witness to my unbelieving friends or else help me to get out of that relationship till I can be.

1 Corinthians 15:44 (GW) 44  It is planted as a physical body. It comes back to life as a spiritual body. As there is a physical body, so there is also a spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:50 (GW) 50  Brothers and sisters, this is what I mean: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. What decays cannot inherit what doesn't decay.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57 (GW) 54  When this body that decays is changed into a body that cannot decay, and this mortal body is changed into a body that will live forever, then the teaching of Scripture will come true: “Death is turned into victory! 55  Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?” 56  Sin gives death its sting, and God's standards give sin its power. 57  Thank God that he gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER: And I really truly appreciate this.  Thank YOU!!!

1 Corinthians 15:58 (GW) 58  So, then, brothers and sisters, don't let anyone move you off the foundation {of your faith}. Always excel in the work you do for the Lord. You know that the hard work you do for the Lord is not pointless.

PRAYER: Unwavering faith and hard work, I’m in.

Psalm 93:4 (GW) 4  The LORD above is mighty— mightier than the sound of raging water, mightier than the foaming waves of the sea.

PRAYER: When life becomes overwhelming, I know I can trust in YOU.

Psalm 93:5 (GW) 5  Your written testimonies are completely reliable. O LORD, holiness is what makes your house beautiful for days without end.

PRAYER: I trust YOUR Word.

Ruth 2:12 (GW) 12  May the LORD reward you for what you have done! May you receive a rich reward from the LORD God of Israel, under whose protection you have come for shelter.

PRAYER: May my works be pleasing to YOU… and others.

Ruth 2:1 (GW) 1  Naomi had a relative. He was from Elimelech's side of the family. He was a man of outstanding character named Boaz.

Ruth 3:11 (GW) 11  Don't be afraid, my daughter. I will do whatever you say. The whole town knows that you are a woman who has strength of character.

PRAYER: I will try to be a person of character and not just a character.

DEVOTION: the Jesus follower is a person of character and seeks to safeguard that character in a world that is very unlike Christ.

FRIDAY 2/17/2017

Read: Mark 9:14-32, 1 Cor 16, Psa 94, Ruth 4

Mark 9:22-23 (GW) 22  The demon has often thrown him into fire or into water to destroy him. If it's possible for you, put yourself in our place, and help us!” 23  Jesus said to him, “As far as possibilities go, everything is possible for the person who believes.”

PRAYER: Thank YOU for putting YOUrself in our place, and for making all things possible.

Mark 9:28-29 (GW) 28  When Jesus went into a house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn't we force the spirit out of the boy?” 29  He told them, “This kind of spirit can be forced out only by prayer.”

PRAYER: Got it, Prayer.  YOU want me to talk to YOU, depend on YOU, focus on YOU.  I can pray more.

1 Corinthians 16:2 (GW) 2  Every Sunday each of you should set aside some of your money and save it. Then money won't have to be collected when I come.

NOTE: this was a seismic shift in the religious world to make Sunday (Resurrection Day, the first day), and not the time honored seventh day, the new Sabbath for the Christian. Huge!

PRAYER: May our church grow to be better responsible in honoring YOU with our finances…and every week.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (GW) 13  Be alert. Be firm in the Christian faith. Be courageous and strong. 14  Do everything with love.

PRAYER: wise, dynamic, unmovable grace. That’s me!

1 Corinthians 16:15-16 (GW) 15  …. This family has devoted itself to serving God's people. So I encourage you, brothers and sisters, 16  to follow the example of people like these and anyone else who shares their labor and hard work.

PRAYER: I will serve today.  I will not be lazy.

Psalm 94:9 (GW) 9  God created ears. Do you think he can't hear? He formed eyes. Do you think he can't see?

PRAYER: I know, what am I thinking sometimes.  Forgive me Lord for my foolish moments.

Psalm 94:12-13 (GW) 12  O LORD, blessed is the person whom you discipline and instruct from your teachings. 13  You give him peace and quiet from times of trouble while a pit is dug to trap wicked people.

PRAYER: As difficult as those moments are I really do appreciate the results of YOUR discipline and commands.

Psalm 94:22 (GW) 22  The LORD has become my stronghold. My God has become my rock of refuge.

PRAYER: I depend on YOU.

Ruth 4:11 (GW) 11  All the people who were at the gate, including the leaders, said, “We are witnesses. …. So show your strength of character in Ephrathah and make a name for yourself in Bethlehem.

PRAYER: I will be a person of character, and I will make a name for myself as well as lift up YOUR name.

Ruth 4:14-17 (GW) 14  The women said to Naomi, “Praise the LORD, who has remembered today to give you someone who will take care of you. The child's name will be famous in Israel. 15  He will bring you a new life and support you in your old age. ….” 16  Naomi took the child, held him on her lap, and became his guardian. 17  The women in the neighborhood said, “Naomi has a son.” So they gave him the name Obed. He became the father of Jesse, who was the father of David.

NOTE: Ruth, an outsider who demonstrated faithfulness and devotion and would become the great great grandmother of Jesus.  Wow!

PRAYER: Lord, thank YOU for receiving me and anyone who would faithfully serve and follow.

DEVOTION: The Jesus follower is known for their “possibility thinking”, their internal strength and resolve, plus their love.  They endure everything and everyone is witness to their character.
