Power Passages & Prayer!

If you use this weekly guide  - you'll cover all of the Bible in just 300 days.   This is sort of a "Cliff Notes" version of the reading plan that Pastor John uses.  But it's more than just learning stuff.  This helps you to communicate with God.  You'll hear Him, and He will hear you..

MONDAY 4/10/2017

Read: Luke 4:1-12, Eph 5:22-33, Psa 119:81-88, 1 Kings 17-18

Luke 4:1-2 (GW) 1   Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit as he left the Jordan River. The Spirit led him while he was in the desert, 2  where he was tempted by the devil for 40 days. During those days Jesus ate nothing, so when they were over, he was hungry.

PRAYER: Lead me as I walk through whatever dark valley’s I come to.

Luke 4:4,8,12 (GW) 4  Jesus answered him, “Scripture says, ‘A person cannot live on bread alone.'” … 8  Jesus answered him, “Scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'” … 12  Jesus answered him, “It has been said, ‘Never tempt the Lord your God.'”

PRAYER: I will serve YOU, worship YOU, and trust YOU.

Ephesians 5:22-23,25,33 (GW) 22  Wives, place yourselves under your husbands' authority as you have placed yourselves under the Lord's authority. 23  The husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. It is his body, and he is its Savior…. 25  Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it…. 33  But every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and wives should respect their husbands.

NOTE: this is not about who is in charge.  This is about love and mutual respect.  Remember in verse 31 it clarifies that husband and wife are ONE (not boss and slave, not two different people, one).

PRAYER: Lord,  I life up all the marriages in the church.  Help the men to be more self-sacrificing and loving like YOU.  And may the ladies honor their husbands without forgetting who YOU’ve made them to be.

Ephesians 5:31 (GW) 31  That's why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will be one.

PRAYER: May YOU protect all our marriages from Satan’s divisive ways.

Psalm 119:81 (GW) 81  My soul is weak from waiting for you to save me. My hope is based on your word.

PRAYER: Forgive my lack of strength.  But I do trust in YOUR Word.

Psalm 119:88 (GW) 88  Give me a new life through your mercy so that I may obey the written instructions, {which came} from your mouth.

PRAYER: I am blessed to have YOUR Holy counsel.  May YOUR mercy and wisdom be evidenced in me.

1 Kings 17:6-9 (GW) 6  Ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening. And he drank from the stream. 7  But after some time the stream dried up because no rain had fallen in the land. 8  Then the LORD spoke his word to Elijah: 9  “Get up, go to Zarephath (which belongs to Sidon), and stay there. I've commanded a widow there to feed you.”

NOTE: God’s provisional hand shows up differently all the time and usually requires new faith.

PRAYER: Lord, sometimes I just wonder what’s going on.  But in my heart, I do trust YOU.

1 Kings 17:12,14,17 (GW) 12  She said, “…I'm going to prepare something for myself and my son so that we can eat it and then die.” …  14  This is what the LORD God of Israel says: Until the LORD sends rain on the land, the jar of flour will never be empty and the jug will always contain oil.” …  17  Afterwards, the son of the woman who owned the house got sick. He got so sick that finally no life was left in him.

PRAYER: Just because life doesn’t run smoothly for me doesn’t mean I can’t trust in YOU.  I put my trust in YOU.

1 Kings 18:21 (GW) 21  Elijah stood up in front of all the people and asked them, “How long will you try to have it both ways? If the LORD is God, follow him; if Baal is God, follow him.” The people didn't say a word.

PRAYER: Help the lukewarm members of the church to make definitive choice as to who they will follow.

1 Kings 18:27 (GW) 27  At noon Elijah started to make fun of them. “Shout louder, since he is a god. Maybe he's thinking, relieving himself, or traveling! Maybe he's sleeping, and you have to wake him!”

NOTE: Not all sarcasm is good nor healthy, but in this case – it’s perfect.

PRAYER: Lord, thank YOU for these humorous faith-filled moments.

1 Kings 18:36-38 (GW) 36  When it was time to offer the sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward. He said, “LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make known today that you are God in Israel and that I'm your servant and have done all these things by your instructions. 37  Answer me, LORD! Answer me! Then these people will know that you, LORD, are God and that you are winning back their hearts.” 38  So a fire from the LORD fell down and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dirt. The fire even dried up the water that was in the trench.

1 Kings 18:43-44 (GW) 43  He said to his servant, “Please go back to {Mount Carmel}, and look toward the sea.” He went up, looked, {came back,} and said, “There's nothing.” Seven times Elijah told him, “Go back.” 44  After the seventh time the servant said, “A little cloud like a man's hand is coming from the sea.” Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare {your chariot}, and leave before the rain delays you.'”

NOTE: After promising rain, it didn’t exactly come the way Elijah thought. Again, God just does what God does.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to hold on when I can’t see YOUR hand at work.

THOT: Having faith in an unchanging God who changes up the scenery all the time can be challenging.

TUESDAY 4/11/2017

Read: Luke 4:13-30, Eph 6:1-9, Psa 119:89-96, 1 Kings 19-20

Luke 4:14 (GW) 14   Jesus returned to Galilee. The power of the Spirit was with him, and the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country.

PRAYER: YOU have no less power today.  May we be good news spreaders in our surrounding communities.

Luke 4:18 (GW) 18  “The Spirit of the Lord is with me. He has anointed me to tell the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to announce forgiveness to the prisoners of sin and the restoring of sight to the blind, to forgive those who have been shattered by sin,

PRAYER: This is good news and it meets a universal need in all of us.  I’ll help spread this news.

Ephesians 6:1,5 (GW) 1  Children, obey your parents because you are Christians. This is the right thing to do. … 5  Slaves, obey your earthly masters with proper respect. Be as sincere as you are when you obey Christ. …

PRAYER: Help us to serve, sincerely, even the bad authorities in our lives.

Ephesians 6:6-7 (GW) 6  Don't obey them only while you're being watched, as if you merely wanted to please people. But obey like slaves who belong to Christ, who have a deep desire to do what God wants them to do. 7  Serve eagerly as if you were serving your heavenly master and not merely serving human masters.

PRAYER: I will serve others as if I’m serving YOU today.

Ephesians 6:4,9 (GW) 4  Fathers, don't make your children bitter about life. Instead, bring them up in Christian discipline and instruction…. 9  Masters, treat your slaves with respect. Don't threaten a slave. You know that there is one master in heaven who has authority over both of you, and he doesn't play favorites.

PRAYER: Note every boss or parent has had a great role model. So guide us and raise up good role models.

Psalm 119:92-94 (GW) 92  If your teachings had not made me happy, then I would have died in my misery. 93  I will never forget your guiding principles, because you gave me a new life through them. 94  I am yours. Save me, because I have searched for your guiding principles.

PRAYER: I am YOUR’s.  Continue to breathe YOUR Word into my being.

1 Kings 19:11-12 (GW) 11  God said, “Go out and stand in front of the LORD on the mountain.” As the LORD was passing by, a fierce wind tore mountains and shattered rocks ahead of the LORD. But the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. But the LORD wasn't in the earthquake. 12  After the earthquake there was a fire. But the LORD wasn't in the fire. And after the fire there was a quiet, whispering voice.

PRAYER: I will patiently wait for YOUR still small voice to lead me on.

1 Kings 20:11 (GW) 11  The king of Israel answered, “The saying goes, ‘Don't brag about a victory before you have even dressed for battle.'”

PRAYER: I will be a person of action instead of bag of wind.

THOT: following Jesus should be an “all in” complete kind of devotion.

WEDNESDAY 4/12/2017

Read: Luke 4:31-37, Eph 6:10-24, Psa 119:97-104, 1 Kgs 21-22

Luke 4:32 (GW) 32  The people were amazed at his teachings because he spoke with authority.

PRAYER: May the church hear YOUR amazing teaching this coming weekend.  And may we hear YOUR still small voice today.

Luke 4:36-37 (GW) 36  Everyone was stunned. They said to one another, “What kind of command is this? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits, and they come out.” 37  So news about him spread to every place throughout the surrounding region.

PRAYER: May there be so many lives and relationships healed that the word spreads throughout our community.

Ephesians 6:11-12 (GW) 11  Put on all the armor that God supplies. In this way you can take a stand against the devil's strategies. 12  This is not a wrestling match against a human opponent. We are wrestling with rulers, authorities, the powers who govern this world of darkness, and spiritual forces that control evil in the heavenly world.

PRAYER: I realize my real enemy is Satan.  And that today the battle still rages on.

Ephesians 6:14-17 (GW) 14  So then, take your stand! Fasten truth around your waist like a belt. Put on God's approval as your breastplate. 15  Put on your shoes so that you are ready to spread the Good News that gives peace. 16  In addition to all these, take the Christian faith as your shield. With it you can put out all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17  Also take salvation as your helmet and the word of God as the sword that the Spirit supplies.

PRAYER: I will operate in truth, bold in my relationship to YOU, I will share my faith with other, and fight off the devil constant attempts, and I will remember today that I am a child of God saved by YOUR grace.

Psalm 119:99-100,104 (GW) 99  I have more insight than all my teachers, because your written instructions are in my thoughts. 100  I have more wisdom than those with many years of experience, because I have obeyed your guiding principles. 104  From your guiding principles I gain understanding. That is why I hate every path that leads to lying.

PRAYER: I appreciate the relevant wisdom and century’s of wisdom YOU easily share with me through YOUR Word.

1 Kings 21:29 (GW) 29  “Do you see how Ahab is humbling himself in my presence? Because he's humbling himself in my presence, I will not let any evil happen to his family while he is alive. I will bring evil on it during his son's lifetime.”

NOTE: as awful as Ahab was (murder, idolatry, “disgusting things”), yet God is moved by his repentance.

PRAYER: Lord, I appreciate how quickly YOU are to show mercy to the repentant.

1 Kings 22:22 (GW) 22  “The Spirit answered, ‘I will go out and be a spirit that tells lies through the mouths of all of Ahab's prophets.' “The LORD said, ‘You will succeed in deceiving him. Go and do it.'

NOTE: there is a difference between what God does and what He permits.  He remains a champion of truth.

PRAYER: Sometimes it is just hard to figure YOU out.  But I guess that’s something I can use eternity for.

1 Kings 22:34,38 (GW) 34  One man aimed his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between his scale armor and his breastplate. Ahab told his chariot driver, “Turn around, and get me away from these troops. I'm badly wounded.”… 38  His chariot was washed at the pool of Samaria, where the prostitutes bathed. The dogs licked up his blood, as the LORD had predicted.

NOTE: Both of these though unlikely to happen were prophesied.

PRAYER: Lord, I’ve got to quit doubting YOUR Word even if the odds are real bad.

THOT: God’s Word has authority to heal, change lives, and do the impossible.  The Jesus follower is wise to read, do, and keep God’s Word daily.

THURSDAY 4/13/2017

Read: Luke 4:38-44, Phil 1:1-11, Psa 119:105-112, 2 Kings 1-3

Luke 4:39 (GW) 39  He bent over her, ordered the fever to leave, and it went away. She got up immediately and prepared a meal for them.

NOTE: Healed and quick to serve again.

PRAYER: I would be like to be more like that.

Luke 4:40-41 (GW) 40  When the sun was setting, everyone who had friends suffering from various diseases brought them to him. He placed his hands on each of them and cured them. 41  Demons came out of many people, ….

PRAYER: May we see the increase of healings and deliverances in the church today. People need YOU.

Luke 4:42 (GW) 42   In the morning he went to a place where he could be alone. ….

PRAYER: I pray for more people to spend some quality quiet time with YOU.

Luke 4:43 (GW) 43  But he said to them, “I have to tell the Good News about the kingdom of God in other cities also. That's what I was sent to do.”

PRAYER: Give us YOUR “have to” initiative for spreading the Good News.

Philippians 1:9 (GW) 9  I pray that your love will keep on growing because of your knowledge and insight.

PRAYER: Fill us with the wisdom of YOUR Word that we might operate in the fullness of YOUR love.

Philippians 1:11 (GW) 11  Jesus Christ will fill your lives with everything that God's approval produces. Your lives will then bring glory and praise to God.

PRAYER: I am content with what YOU’ve blessed me with. May my life bring honor and glory to YOU.

Psalm 119:105 (GW) 105  Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.

PRAYER: And I appreciate the divine guidance.

Psalm 119:110-112 (GW) 110  … I have never wandered away from your guiding principles. 111  Your written instructions are mine forever. They are the joy of my heart. 112  I have decided to obey your laws. They offer a reward that never ends.

PRAYER: I not only read YOUR Word, I keep YOUR Word.  I choose today to live in accordance with YOUR Word.

2 Kings 1:13-14 (GW) 13  The king sent a third officer with 50 men. The officer of the third group went up the hill and knelt in front of Elijah. The officer begged him, “Man of God, please treat my life and the lives of these 50 servants of yours as something precious. 14  Fire has come from heaven and burned up the first two officers and their 100 men. But treat my life as something precious.”

2 Kings 2:7-8 (GW) 7  Fifty disciples of the prophets stood at a distance as Elijah and Elisha stood by the Jordan River. 8  Elijah took his coat, rolled it up, and struck the water with it. The water divided to their left and their right, and the two men crossed {the river} on dry ground.

2 Kings 2:11 (GW) 11  As they continued walking and talking, a fiery chariot with fiery horses separated the two of them, and Elijah went to heaven in a windstorm.

2 Kings 2:21-22 (GW) 21  He went to the spring and threw the salt into it. Then he said, “This is what the LORD says: I have purified this water. No more deaths or crop failures will come from this water.” 22  To this day the water is still pure, as Elisha had said.

2 Kings 2:23-24 (GW) 23  From there he went to Bethel. As he walked along the road, some boys came out of the city and mocked him. They said, “Go away, baldy! Go away!” 24  Looking back, he saw them and cursed them in the LORD'S name. Two bears came out of the woods and tore 42 of these youths apart.

NOTE: Some pretty wild stories follow these prophets. Some cool, some cruel.  But surely there is a God of the impossible present.

PRAYER: Lord, I’m open to whatever YOU’d like to do in our midst.

2 Kings 3:15 (GW) 15  But get me someone to play some music.” While the musician was playing, the LORD'S power came over Elisha.

NOTE:  I’ve often said that church is a refueling station, but it is not necessarily a place where you come to get filled up.  You come to give (praise, tithes, service), but you leave empowered.  It is for the Lord to receive and for you to experience His Holy presence.

PRAYER: Lord, may this weekend’s worship be a super blessing to YOU.  And may people experience YOU in the fullness of YOUR glory.

THOT: Jesus followers are devoted to serving, sharing, singing, and seeking God’s counsel. Miracles usually follow this life of devotion.

FRIDAY 4/14/2017

Read: Luke 5:1-11, Phil 1:12-20, Psa 119:113-120, 2 Kings 4-5

Luke 5:5,8-10 (GW) 5  Simon answered, “Teacher, we worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I'll lower the nets.” … 8  When Simon Peter saw this, he knelt in front of Jesus and said, “Leave me, Lord! I'm a sinful person!” 9  Simon and everyone who was with him was amazed to see the large number of fish they had caught. 10  … Jesus told Simon, “Don't be afraid. From now on you will catch people instead of fish.”

NOTE: Evangelism is not about talent, it’s about obedience. It does not require confidence, but it does require faith.  Given a little humility, obedience, and faith – we can catch thousands for Christ.

PRAYER: Lord, no more excuses.  Show me where to lower my nets.

Philippians 1:12 (GW) 12  I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what happened to me has helped to spread the Good News.

PRAYER: YOU can use any story to spread the gospel in me, right?!!

Philippians 1:20 (GW) 20  I eagerly expect and hope that I will have nothing to be ashamed of. I will speak very boldly and honor Christ in my body, now as always, whether I live or die.

PRAYER: I will be YOUR spokesperson.

Psalm 119:114 (GW) 114  You are my hiding place and my shield. My hope is based on your word.

PRAYER: YOUR Living Word gives me counsel, security, and hope.

2 Kings 4:2-3,6-7 (GW) 2  Elisha asked her, “What should I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” She answered, “I have nothing in the house except a jar of olive oil.” 3  Elisha said, “Borrow many empty containers from all your neighbors. … 6  When the containers were full, she told her son, “Bring me another container.” He told her, “There are no more containers.” So the olive oil stopped flowing. 7  She went and told the man of God. He said, “Sell the oil, and pay your debt. The rest is for you and your children.”

NOTE: God will certainly provide for us if we reach out to our neighbors.  This story isn’t just about multiplication or provision, it’s about evangelism and relationships. You’ve got to leave the house and take your faith to your neighbors.

PRAYER: Lord, I will be a faith sharer.

2 Kings 4:34,41-43 (GW) 34  Then he lay on the boy, putting his mouth on the boy's mouth, his eyes on the boy's eyes, his hands on the boy's hands. He crouched over the boy's body, and it became warm…. 41  Elisha said, “Bring some flour.” He threw it into the pot and said, “Dish it out for the people to eat.” Then there was nothing harmful in the pot.  42  A man from Baal Shalisha brought bread made from the first harvested grain, 20 barley loaves, and fresh grain to the man of God. The man of God said, “Give it to the people to eat.” 43  But his servant asked, “How can I set this in front of a hundred people?” “Give it to the people to eat,” the man of God said. “This is what the LORD says: They will eat and even have some left over.”

PRAYER: Healing, feeding, multiplying, YOU do it all, don’t YOU?!!!

2 Kings 5:10-11 (GW) 10  Elisha sent a messenger to him. He said, “Wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River, and your skin will be healthy and clean.” 11  But Naaman became angry and left. He said, “I thought he would at least come out{of his house}, stand somewhere, call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his hand over the{infected} place, and heal the skin disease.

NOTE: Isn’t it just like us to demand God’s attention but fuss over how He gives it to us?!!

PRAYER: Lord, forgive me my religious prejudice. Forgive me for questioning YOUR unusual ways.

2 Kings 5:17-18 (GW) 17  So Naaman said, “…. From now on I will sacrifice to the LORD alone. I will not offer any burnt offering or sacrifice to any other gods. 18  May the LORD forgive me ….”

NOTE: An angry but willing (obedient) Naaman is healed before he turns from other idols.  God is gracious and merciful

PRAYER: Lord, I appreciate YOUR faithfulness even though, so many times, I am not.

THOT: So God wants the Good News spread by the ‘available’ not necessarily the ‘able’.  He’ll use their stories, good and bad.   Without training, using only what they already have – thousands can be saved.
