Power Passages & Prayer!

If you use this weekly guide  - you'll cover all of the Bible in just 300 days.   This is sort of a "Cliff Notes" version of the reading plan that Pastor John uses.  But it's more than just learning stuff.  This helps you to communicate with God.  You'll hear Him, and He will hear you..

MONDAY 5/15/2017

Read: Luke 9:37-50, 1 Thess 2:1-9, Psa 136, 1 Chron 26-28

Luke 9:42-44 (GW) 42  …. Jesus ordered the evil spirit to leave. He cured the boy and gave him back to his father. 43  Everyone was amazed to see God's wonderful power. Everyone was amazed at all the things that Jesus was doing. So he said to his disciples, 44  “Listen carefully to what I say. The Son of Man will be betrayed and handed over to people.”

NOTE: the cheerers will soon become the jeerers.  Pay little attention to people’s praises nor complaints.  Just do the right thing.

PRAYER: Lord, forgive us for the lack of depth in our faith.  YOU deserve better.

Luke 9:48 (GW) 48  Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me. Whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. The one who is least among all of you is the one who is greatest.”

PRAYER: help me to serve and be receptive to everyone, like YOU are!

Luke 9:50 (GW) 50  Jesus said to him, “Don't stop him! Whoever isn't against you is for you.”

PRAYER: I could probably be a little more open to the different people and the different ways they do things.

1 Thessalonians 2:2 (GW) 2  As you know, we suffered rough and insulting treatment in Philippi. But our God gave us the courage to tell you his Good News in spite of strong opposition.

PRAYER: I understand that sharing the Gospel isn’t always going to be pleasant.

1 Thessalonians 2:3-4,9 (GW) 3  When we encouraged you, we didn't use unethical schemes, corrupt practices, or deception. 4  Rather, we are always spreading the Good News. God trusts us to do this because we passed his test. We don't try to please people but God, who tests our motives.  9  You remember, brothers and sisters, our work and what we did to earn a living. We worked night and day so that we could bring you the Good News of God without being a burden to any of you.

PRAYER: Help us get to the place where the American church is tirelessly working to spread the Good News.

1 Thessalonians 2:7 (GW) 7  although as apostles of Christ we had the right to do this. Instead, we were gentle when we were with you, like a mother taking care of her children.

PRAYER: May our church be found as gentle and caring.

Psalm 136:1 (GW) 1  Give thanks to the LORD because he is good, because his mercy endures forever.

PRAYER: Thank YOU!!!!

1 Chronicles 28:9-10 (GW) 9  “And you, my son Solomon, learn to know your father's God. Serve the LORD wholeheartedly and willingly because he searches every heart and understands every thought {we have}. If you dedicate your life to serving him, he will accept you. But if you abandon him, he will reject you from then on. 10  So be careful, because the LORD has chosen you to build the temple as his holy place. Be strong, and do it.”

PRAYER: I will serve YOU and obey YOU with all my heart.

1 Chronicles 28:20 (GW) 20  David also told his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don't be afraid or terrified. The LORD God, my God, will be with you. He will not abandon you before all the work on the LORD'S temple is finished.

PRAYER: Not the world nor anything in it is stronger than YOU.  I choose to partner with YOU.

THOT: Jesus followers are servants of both God and one another.

TUESDAY 5/16/2017

Read: Luke 9:51-62, 1 Thess 2:10-20, Psa 137, 1 Chron 29

Luke 9:54-55 (GW) 54  James and John, his disciples, saw this. They asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?” 55  But he turned and corrected them.

NOTE: some manuscripts add “The Son of Man didn’t come to destroy people’s lives but to save them”

PRAYER: Lord, forgive me for the dumb ideas I thought YOU inspired.  I will be about building up and not tearing down.

Luke 9:57-62 (GW) 57   As they were walking along the road, a man said to Jesus, “I'll follow you wherever you go.” 58  Jesus told him, “Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to sleep.” 59  He told another man, “Follow me!” But the man said, “Sir, first let me go to bury my father.” 60  But Jesus told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. You must go everywhere and tell about the kingdom of God.” 61  Another said, “I'll follow you, sir, but first let me tell my family goodbye.” 62  Jesus said to him, “Whoever starts to plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God.”

PRAYER: I want to be a follower wholly devoted to YOU above everything and everyone else. Forgive me for ever making YOU anything but first in my life.

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (GW) 11  You know very well that we treated each of you the way a father treats his children. We comforted you and encouraged you. Yet, we insisted that 12  you should live in a way that proves you belong to the God who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

PRAYER: It will be clear to everyone that I am YOUR disciple.

Psalm 137:1 (GW) 1  By the rivers of Babylon, we sat down and cried as we remembered Zion.

PRAYER: There are those dry times when it’s just sad.  I know this too shall pass.  And I’m grateful that YOU never really abandon me although I may feel so alone. Thank YOU!

1 Chronicles 29:5 (GW) 5  …. Who else is willing to make an offering and dedicate himself to the LORD today?”

PRAYER: I am, Lord.

1 Chronicles 29:17 (GW) 17  I know, my God, that you examine hearts and delight in honesty. With an honest heart I have willingly offered all these things. I've been overjoyed to see your people here offering so willingly to you.

PRAYER: Thank YOU for the honest, appreciative, and hope-filled contributors at the church. Bless them.

1 Chronicles 29:18 (GW) 18  LORD God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, always watch over your people's deepest thoughts. Keep their hearts directed toward you.

PRAYER: May YOU remain central to everyone’s life and agenda.

THOT: wholly devoted, with love and appreciation, Jesus followers can tough it out in the roughest of times.

WEDNESDAY 5/17/2017

Read: Luke 10:1-16, 1 Thess 3:1-6, Psa 138, 2 Chron 1-2

Luke 10:2,9 (GW) 2  He told them, “The harvest is large, but the workers are few. So ask the Lord who gives this harvest to send workers to harvest his crops. …. 9  Heal the sick that are there, and tell the people, ‘The kingdom of God is near you!'

PRAYER: So I’m asking YOU for more workers to go and heal and to proclaim the Good News.

Luke 10:3-6 (GW) 3  Go! I'm sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4  Don't carry a wallet, a traveling bag, or sandals, and don't stop to greet anyone on the way. 5  Whenever you go into a house, greet the family right away with the words, ‘May there be peace in this house.’  6  If a peaceful person lives there, your greeting will be accepted. But if that's not the case, your greeting will be rejected.

NOTE: prepared for the worst, living simply, focused on the mission, and blessing everyone whether they receive it or not.

PRAYER: Lord, I am ready.  Send me!

1 Thessalonians 3:2-3 (GW) 2  we sent our brother Timothy to you. He serves God by spreading the Good News about Christ. His mission was to strengthen and encourage you in your faith 3  so that these troubles don't disturb any of you. You know that we're destined to suffer persecution.

PRAYER: I realize this is earth and not heaven. Stuff happens!  I will help others to remain strong in the faith.

1 Thessalonians 3:5 (GW) 5  But when I couldn't wait any longer, I sent {Timothy} to find out about your faith. I wanted to see whether the tempter had in some way tempted you, making our work meaningless.

PRAYER: I am fully aware that despite the many great and godly works in the church, Satan is ever present to destroy or pervert them.

Psalm 138:6 (GW) 6  Even though the LORD is high above, he sees humble people {close up}, and he recognizes arrogant people from a distance.

PRAYER: May YOU find me humble and always appreciative.

Psalm 138:7 (GW) 7  Even though I walk into the middle of trouble, you guard my life against the anger of my enemies. You stretch out your hand, and your right hand saves me.

PRAYER: I appreciate YOUR constant oversight in my life.

2 Chronicles 1:7,10-12 (GW) 7  That night God appeared to Solomon. He said, “What can I give you?” …. 10  Give me wisdom and knowledge so that I may lead these people. …” 11  God replied to Solomon, “I know this request is from your heart. You didn't ask for riches, fortunes, honor, or the death of those who hate you. You didn't even ask for a long life. Instead, you've asked for wisdom and knowledge to judge my people, over whom I made you king. 12  So wisdom and knowledge will be given to you. I will also give you riches, fortunes, and honor like no other king before or after you.”

PRAYER: As much as I like the idea of fame and fortune – I will settle for wisdom and knowledge to bless the church and to reach the unchurched.

2 Chronicles 2:5-6 (GW) 5  The temple I am building will be great because our God is greater than all other gods. 6  But who is able to build him a temple when heaven itself, the highest heaven, cannot hold him? Who am I to build him a temple except as a place to sacrifice in his presence?

PRAYER: May this coming weekend YOU be truly blessed in the building we have created for sacrifices.  May the sacrifices be sincere and honoring to YOU.

THOT: true believers know that this is earth so they know that there may not always be heavenly results.  They continue on anyway.

THURSDAY 5/18/2017

Read: Luke 10:17-24, 1 Thess 3:7-13, Psa 139, 2 Chron 3-5

Luke 10:19-20 (GW) 19  I have given you the authority to trample snakes and scorpions and to destroy the enemy's power. Nothing will hurt you. 20  However, don't be happy that evil spirits obey you. Be happy that your names are written in heaven.”

PRAYER: I do love the miracle stories, but I am most appreciative of my eternal salvation.  This “earth stuff” isn’t going to last anyway.

Luke 10:21-22 (GW) 21  In that hour the Holy Spirit filled Jesus with joy. Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from wise and intelligent people and revealing them to little children. …. 22  “…. And no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him.”

PRAYER: Help me to reach those who aren’t “too smart” for salvation.  And give me love and patience for the spiritually immature who need what I have (and what YOU give).

1 Thessalonians 3:8 (GW) 8  Now we can go on living as long as you keep your relationship with the Lord firm.

PRAYER: I, too, am blessed when I hear of the other’s grown in YOU.  May I be part of that.

1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 (GW) 12  We also pray that the Lord will greatly increase your love for each other and for everyone else, just as we love you. 13  Then he will strengthen you to be holy. Then you will be blameless in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all God's holy people.

PRAYER: Bless us with love and devotion for both YOU and each other.  May we shine for YOU.

Psalm 139:1-3 (GW) 1  O LORD, you have examined me, and you know me. 2  You alone know when I sit down and when I get up. You read my thoughts from far away. 3  You watch me when I travel and when I rest. You are familiar with all my ways.

PRAYER: Nobody knows me better than YOU.

Psalm 139:13-14 (GW) 13  You alone created my inner being. You knitted me together inside my mother. 14  I will give thanks to you because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made. Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this.

NOTE: Another reason believers don’t like abortion

PRAYER: Lord, thank YOU that I am not a mistake.  I am, as I am, the product of YOUR creative hand.

Psalm 139:23-24 (GW) 23  Examine me, O God, and know my mind. Test me, and know my thoughts. 24  See whether I am on an evil path. Then lead me on the everlasting path.

PRAYER: Clean up the areas in my life that need revamping.

2 Chronicles 5:8-9 (GW) 8  The angels' outstretched wings were over the place where the ark {rested} so that the angels became a covering above the ark and its poles. 9  The poles were so long that their ends could be seen in the holy place by anyone standing in front of the inner room, but they couldn't be seen outside. (They are still there today.)

NOTE: The Ark could only be seen by a few and only on special occasions.  But the poles connected to the ark could be observed by almost everyone (there are always those “outsiders” who just won’t see it).  Isn’t that a metaphor of how we see God today?!   We see only the telltale signs of His presence.  But in heaven we’ll see all of His glory.

PRAYER: Lord, may I be content with the “poles” and little reminders YOU send of YOUR Holy Power and Presence.

2 Chronicles 5:13 (GW) 13  the trumpeters and singers praised and thanked the LORD in unison. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other musical instruments, they sang in praise to the LORD: “He is good; his mercy endures forever.” Then the LORD'S temple was filled with a cloud.

PRAYER: May YOU hear songs from the heart this coming weekend.

THOT: We may only see glimpses of God’s glory while on earth, but they are enough to give us hope in the eternal.

FRIDAY 5/19/2017

Read: Luke 10:25-37, 1 Thess 4:1-10, Psa 140, 2 Chron 6-7

Luke 10:27 (GW) 27  He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind.' And ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.'”

PRAYER: I will be relationally strong vertically (with YOU) and horizontally (with YOUR other creations).

Luke 10:36-37 (GW) 36  “Of these three men, who do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by robbers?” 37  The expert said, “The one who was kind enough to help him.” Jesus told him, “Go and imitate his example!”

PRAYER: No more theological arguments, just living the gospel for me.

1 Thessalonians 4:1 (GW) 1  Now then, brothers and sisters, because of the Lord Jesus we ask and encourage you to excel in living a God-pleasing life even more than you already do. Do this the way we taught you.

PRAYER: I will be a holy example

1 Thessalonians 4:4-5 (GW) 4  Each of you should know that finding a husband or wife for yourself is to be done in a holy and honorable way, 5  not in the passionate, lustful way of people who don't know God.

PRAYER: So a bar is probably out, right?!! For those relationships that got started on the wrong foot, heal them and make them holy.

1 Thessalonians 4:7 (GW) 7  God didn't call us to be sexually immoral but to be holy.

PRAYER: Help us to keep our distant from the popular but perverted culture we live in.

Psalm 140:8 (GW) 8  O LORD, do not give wicked people what they want. Do not let their evil plans succeed, {or} they will become arrogant. Selah

PRAYER: Sometimes it seems like evil wins, I will trust YOU with the outcome.

Psalm 140:12-13 (GW) 12  I know that the LORD will defend the rights of those who are oppressed and the cause of those who are needy. 13  Indeed, righteous people will give thanks to your name. Decent people will live in your presence.

PRAYER: I’m not perfect, but YOU make me decent.  May I also love mercy and do justly like YOU.

2 Chronicles 6:26-27 (GW) 26  “When the sky is shut and there's no rain because they are sinning against you and they pray toward this place, praise your name, and turn away from their sin because you made them suffer, 27  then hear {them} in heaven. Forgive the sins of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the proper way to live. Then send rain on the land, which you gave to your people as an inheritance.

PRAYER: Thank YOU, for “do-overs”.

2 Chronicles 6:32-33 (GW) 32  “People who are not Israelites will come from distant countries because of your great name, mighty hand, and powerful arm. When they come to pray facing this temple, 33  then hear {them} in heaven, the place where you live. Do everything they ask you so that all the people of the world may know your name and fear you like your people Israel and learn that this temple which I built bears your name.

PRAYER: I will be open and welcoming to the outsiders who come to church.  May they be magnets to the unbelieving world that YOU are real.

2 Chronicles 6:36-39 (GW) 36  “They may sin against you. (No one is sinless.) …. 37  If they come to their senses, are sorry for what they've done, and plead with you …, saying, ‘We have sinned. …,' 38  if they change their attitude …. if they pray to you …., 39  then in heaven, the place where you live, hear their prayer for mercy. Do what is right for them. Forgive your people, who have sinned against you.

PRAYER: How gracious YOU can be with the repentant.

2 Chronicles 7:13-14 (GW) 13  I may shut the sky so that there is no rain, or command grasshoppers to devour the countryside, or send an epidemic among my people. 14  However, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, search for me, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear {their prayer} from heaven, forgive their sins, and heal their country.

PRAYER: I join with my other humbled and repentant American brothers and sisters and pray for cleansing and renewal in our land.

2 Chronicles 7:15 (GW) 15  My eyes will be open, and my ears will pay attention to those prayers at this place.

PRAYER: May our worship facility truly become a house of prayers.

THOT: a believer’s faith is evident in their lifestyle.
