MONDAY 8/21/2017 (10-06) #2065

Read: John 2:1-11, Jam 3:1-12, Eccl 4, Jer 12-13

John 2:6,10-11 (GW) 6  Six stone water jars were there. They were used for Jewish purification rituals. Each jar held 18 to 27 gallons. … 10  and said to him, “Everyone serves the best wine first. When people are drunk, the host serves cheap wine. But you have saved the best wine for now.” 11  Cana in Galilee was the place where Jesus began to perform miracles. He made his glory public there, and his disciples believed in him.

PRAYER: How fitting that YOU began YOUR ministry serving the cup.  I appreciate YOUR blood.

James 3:4-5 (GW) 4  The same thing is true for ships. They are very big and are driven by strong winds. Yet, by using small rudders, pilots steer ships wherever they want them to go. 5  In the same way the tongue is a small part of the body, but it can brag about doing important things. A large forest can be set on fire by a little flame.

PRAYER: Help me to gain control of my tongue.

James 3:9-10 (GW) 9  With our tongues we praise our Lord and Father. Yet, with the same tongues we curse people, who were created in God's likeness. 10  Praise and curses come from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, this should not happen!

PRAYER: I know, help me to speak well of everyone.

Ecclesiastes 4:8 (GW) 8  ….. Their eyes are never satisfied with riches. But {they never ask themselves} why they are working so hard and depriving themselves of good things. Even this is pointless and a terrible tragedy.

PRAYER: Help me to slow down and enjoy more of the present than the profit.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (GW) 9  Two people are better than one because {together} they have a good reward for their hard work. 10  If one falls, the other can help his friend get up. But how tragic it is for the one who is {all} alone when he falls. There is no one to help him get up. 11  Again, if two people lie down together, they can keep warm, but how can one person keep warm? 12  Though one person may be overpowered by another, two people can resist one opponent. A triple-braided rope is not easily broken.

PRAYER: Bless our small group ministries and mentoring couples in our church.

Jeremiah 12:2 (GW) 2  You plant them, and they take root. They grow, and they produce fruit. They speak well of you with their lips, but their hearts are far from you.

PRAYER: Just because a church/business/marriage “looks” good doesn’t mean that it is good. May we be found authentically good.

Jeremiah 13:22 (GW) 22  If you ask yourself, Why do these things happen to me?” it's because you have so many sins. Your clothes have been torn off and your limbs are bare.

PRAYER: And I do ask YOUR forgiveness.  Thank YOU for YOUR fresh mercies to me every day.  May my life honor YOU.

THOT: True believers need the life flowing blood of the lamb and the warmth of the church’s fellowship to stay on track.

TUESDAY 8/22/2017 (10-07) #2066

Read: John 2:12-25, Jam 3:13-18, Eccl 5, Jer 14-15

John 2:16-17 (GW) 16  He told those who sold pigeons, “Pick up this stuff, and get it out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!” 17  His disciples remembered that Scripture said, “Devotion for your house will consume me.”

PRAYER: Oh that our weekend worship would be pleasing and devoted to YOU.

John 2:21-22 (GW) 21  But the temple Jesus spoke about was his own body. 22  After he came back to life, his disciples remembered that he had said this. So they believed the Scripture and this statement that Jesus had made.

PRAYER: Sometimes I am as slow to get it.  Thank YOU for YOUR patience.

John 2:23-25 (GW) 23  While Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Passover festival, many people believed in him because they saw the miracles that he performed. 24  Jesus, however, was wary of these believers. He understood people 25  and didn't need anyone to tell him about human nature. He knew what people were really like.

PRAYER: We are fickle, even after we’ve witnessed a miracle. Thanks for understanding us.

James 3:13 (GW) 13  Do any of you have wisdom and insight? Show this by living the right way with the humility that comes from wisdom.

PRAYER: People will know that I’m a believer by what I do as well as what I say.

James 3:17 (GW) 17  However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure. Then it is peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good deeds, impartial, and sincere.

PRAYER: may my life show YOUR purity and peace, gentleness and grace, good deeds and good works, sincerity, love, and impartiality.

James 3:18 (GW) 18  A harvest that has God's approval comes from the peace planted by peacemakers.

PRAYER: May our church produce peacemakers.

Ecclesiastes 5:2 (GW) 2  Don't be in a hurry to talk. Don't be eager to speak in the presence of God. Since God is in heaven and you are on earth, limit the number of your words.

PRAYER: Speak Lord, your servant is listening.

Ecclesiastes 5:4 (GW) 4  When you make a promise to God, don't be slow to keep it because God doesn't like fools. Keep your promise.

Ecclesiastes 5:6 (GW) 6  Don't let your mouth talk you into committing a sin. Don't say in the presence of a {temple} messenger, “My promise was a mistake!” Why should God become angry at your excuse and destroy what you've accomplished?

PRAYER: Help me to guard my mouth.

Ecclesiastes 5:10,13 (GW) 10  Whoever loves money will never be satisfied with money. Whoever loves wealth will never be satisfied with more income. Even this is pointless. … 13  There is a painful tragedy that I have seen under the sun: Riches lead to the downfall of those who hoard them.

PRAYER: I pray for all American Christians who have no idea how wealthy they really are.

Ecclesiastes 5:12 (GW) 12  The sleep of working people is sweet, whether they eat a little or a lot. But the full stomachs that rich people have will not allow them to sleep.

Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 (GW) 18  At last I have seen what is good and beautiful: It is to eat and drink and to enjoy the good in all our hard work under the sun during the brief lives God gives us. That is our lot {in life}. 19  It is a gift from God when God gives some people wealth and possessions, the power to enjoy them, {the ability} to accept their lot in life, and {the ability} to rejoice in their own hard work.

PRAYER: I am grateful.  Thank YOU for my work, and my good life.

Jeremiah 14:15 (GW) 15  “I didn't send these prophets. Yet, they prophesy in my name that there will be no wars or famines in this land. So this is what I, the LORD, say about them: Wars and famines will bring an end to these prophets.

PRAYER: Help us to be wise to the false prophets of this world.

Jeremiah 14:22 (GW) 22  The worthless gods of the nations can't make it rain. By themselves, the skies can't give showers. But you can, O LORD our God. We have hope in you because you do all these things.

PRAYER: All glory to YOU, Lord!

Jeremiah 15:19-20 (GW) 19  This is what the LORD says: If you will return, I will take you back. If you will speak what is worthwhile and not what is worthless, you will stand in my presence. The people will return to you, but you will not return to them. 20  I will make you like a solid bronze wall in front of these people. They will fight you, but they will not defeat you. I am with you, and I will save you and rescue you, declares the LORD.

PRAYER: I pray for all the faithful leaders who will not compromise YOUR Word.  Empower them to continue to speak powerful words of truth.

THOT: God’s people are as fickle as worldly people many times.  It is up to the faithful to stay strong in God’s Word and lead by example.

WEDNESDAY 8/23/2017 (10-08) #2067

Read: John 3:1-15, Jam 4:1-10, Eccl 6, Jer 16-18

John 3:3,5-6 (GW) 3  Jesus replied to Nicodemus, “I can guarantee this truth: No one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” … 5  Jesus answered Nicodemus, “I can guarantee this truth: No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6  Flesh and blood give birth to flesh and blood, but the Spirit gives birth to things that are spiritual.

PRAYER: I thank YOU for my spiritual re-birth.

John 3:14-15 (GW) 14  “As Moses lifted up the snake {on a pole} in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up. 15  Then everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.”

PRAYER: Thank YOU for my spiritual healing, for purchasing my way to heaven, a gift I don’t deserve but humbly receive.

James 4:1 (GW) 1  What causes fights and quarrels among you? Aren't they caused by the selfish desires that fight to control you?

PRAYER: Help me to look beyond my selfish desires.  Help me to love my enemies and be a peacemaker among my brethren.

James 4:2-3 (GW) 2  You want what you don't have, so you commit murder. You're determined to have things, but you can't get what you want. You quarrel and fight. You don't have the things you want, because you don't pray for them. 3  When you pray for things, you don't get them because you want them for the wrong reason—for your own pleasure.

PRAYER: YOU are right, wanting things isn’t necessarily the bad thing, and it’s why I want them and my worldly approach to getting them.  I will try to leave my desires and requests with YOU first.

James 4:6,10 (GW) 6  But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, “God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people.” 10  Humble yourselves in the Lord's presence. Then he will give you a high position.

PRAYER: I will try to serve humbly with YOUR powerful example to guide me.

James 4:7-9 (GW) 7  So place yourselves under God's authority. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. 8  Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners, and clear your minds, you doubters. 9  Be miserable, mourn, and cry. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into gloom.

NOTE: following an indictment for selfishly seeking joy in the world – this is not a sentence against joy but a divine call to repentance.

PRAYER: Lord, I am sorry for my sins.  And I want to grow closer to YOU and farther from the Devil.  I will, with YOUR help, clean things up in my life.

Ecclesiastes 6:7 (GW) 7  Everything that people work so hard for goes into their mouths, but their appetite is never satisfied.

PRAYER: Help us over-blessed Americans to appreciate our blessing and use them for YOUR glory.

Ecclesiastes 6:9 (GW) 9  It is better to look at what is in front of you than to go looking for what you want. Even this is pointless. {It's like} trying to catch the wind.

PRAYER: help us all to stop and enjoy “the moment”.

Jeremiah 16:17 (GW) 17  I see everything that they do. They can't hide anything from me. Their wickedness can't be hidden; I can see it.

PRAYER: So what makes me think I can get away with stuff sometimes.  How silly of me.  Forgive me!

Jeremiah 16:19,21 (GW) 19  The LORD is my strength and my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. Nations come to you from the most distant parts of the world and say, “Our ancestors have inherited lies, worthless and unprofitable gods.” 21  That is what I will teach them. This time I will make my power and my strength known to them. Then they will know that my name is the LORD.”

PRAYER: YOU are our strength and shield.  YOU are always present even when things look bad.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (GW) 7  Blessed is the person who trusts the LORD. The LORD will be his confidence. 8  He will be like a tree that is planted by water. It will send its roots down to a stream. It will not be afraid in the heat of summer. Its leaves will turn green. It will not be anxious during droughts. It will not stop producing fruit.

PRAYER: Connected to YOU, I will be a confident fruit producing, well nourished disciple.

Jeremiah 17:10 (GW) 10  I, the LORD, search minds and test hearts. I will reward each person for what he has done. I will reward him for the results of his actions.

PRAYER: My life will show that I’m appreciative of YOUR mercy and grace.

THOT: Spiritual renewal comes through the Holy Spirit but should result in changed lives.

THURSDAY 8/24/2017 (10-09) #2068

Read: John 3:16-21, Jam 4:11-17, Eccl 7:1-14, Jer 19-22

John 3:16-18 (GW) 16  God loved the world this way: He gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. 17  God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but to save the world. 18  Those who believe in him won't be condemned. But those who don't believe are already condemned because they don't believe in God's only Son.

NOTE: So again, it’s clear that not everyone goes to heaven.  Yet God has gone to great lengths to get anyone, who wants it, in.

PRAYER: Lord, thank YOU for YOUR love, YOUR plan, and YOUR Son.

John 3:19-20 (GW) 19  This is why people are condemned: The light came into the world. Yet, people loved the dark rather than the light because their actions were evil. 20  People who do what is wrong hate the light and don't come to the light. They don't want their actions to be exposed.

PRAYER: Help me to reach those who might be willing to come to the light.

John 3:21 (GW) 21  But people who do what is true come to the light so that the things they do for God may be clearly seen.

PRAYER: I know I’m saved by grace, but I hope my actions will declare that faith as well.

James 4:11,12 (GW) 11  Brothers and sisters, stop slandering each other. Those who slander and judge other believers slander and judge God's teachings. If you judge God's teachings, you are no longer following them. Instead, you are judging them. … 12  There is only one teacher and judge. …So who are you to judge your neighbor?

PRAYER: I’ll try to leave the judging to YOU.  Help the church to speak in love to each other.

James 4:16 (GW) 16  However, you brag because you're arrogant. All such bragging is evil.

James 4:17 (GW) 17  Whoever knows what is right but doesn't do it is sinning.

PRAYER: I feel the bar is being raised. But I’m still in!!!!

Ecclesiastes 7:1 (GW) 1  A good name is better than expensive perfume, and the day you die is better than the day you're born.

PRAYER: I will try to live a life of honor

Ecclesiastes 7:3 (GW) 3  Sorrow is better than laughter because, in spite of a sad face, the heart can be joyful.

PRAYER: Only YOU can make that so true.

Ecclesiastes 7:5 (GW) 5  It is better to listen to wise people who reprimand you than to fools who sing your praises.

PRAYER: Even though the later seems more fun, I’ll take the reprimands.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 (GW) 9  Don't be quick to get angry, because anger is typical of fools.

PRAYER: I’ll try to still that storm.

Ecclesiastes 7:14 (GW) 14  When times are good, be happy. But when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one time as well as the other so that mortals cannot predict their future.

PRAYER: So, I guess I can learn and growth from both good and bad in my life.

Jeremiah 20:12 (GW) 12  But the LORD of Armies examines the righteous. He sees their motives and thoughts. ….

PRAYER: YOU want and expect more from us.  May our actions come from pure hearts of devotion to YOU.

THOT: Though God’s gift of salvation is free, the true believer must not only receive it but they must reflect the power of that gift in their day to day living.

FRIDAY 8/25/2017 (10-10) #2069

Read: John 3:22-36, Jam 5:1-6, Eccl 7:15-29, Jer 23-25

John 3:27 (GW) 27  John answered, “People can't receive anything unless it has been given to them from heaven.

PRAYER: It’s all YOUR’s, YOU made, YOU still own it, it’s all YOUR’s.  Thank YOU for letting us enjoy it.

John 3:29-30 (GW) 29  “The groom is the person to whom the bride belongs. The best man, who stands and listens to him, is overjoyed when the groom speaks. This is the joy that I feel. 30  He must increase in importance, while I must decrease in importance.

PRAYER: Ditto, I love YOUR Word.  I gladly bow to YOUR greatness.

John 3:36 (GW) 36  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, he will see God's constant anger.”

NOTE: not everyone will go to heaven.  Heaven is a gift of God but a choice for mankind.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to reach the unreached, the unsaved, and the lost in my life.

James 5:3-5 (GW) 3  …You have stored up riches in these last days. 4  The wages you refused to pay the people who harvested your fields shout {to God} against you. …. 5  You have lived in luxury and pleasure here on earth. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter.

PRAYER: We American Christians could stand to be a lot more generous, myself included.

Ecclesiastes 7:20 (GW) 20  Certainly, there is no one so righteous on earth that he always does what is good and never sins.

PRAYER: That’s me too!  Thank YOU for YOUR mercy and grace to me.

Ecclesiastes 7:21 (GW) 21  Don't take everything that people say to heart, or you may hear your own servant cursing you.

PRAYER: I will try to hear YOUR powerful but quiet Word regarding my life.  That Word matters!

Jeremiah 23:3-4 (GW) 3  “Then I will gather the remaining part of my flock from all the countries where I chased them. I will bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fertile and increase in number. 4  I will put shepherds over them. Those shepherds will take care of them. My sheep will no longer be afraid or terrified, and not one of them will be missing,” declares the LORD.

PRAYER: Lord, help us to reach the lost, and return the missing.  Inspire and empower us to care for those with us and those who are missing.

Jeremiah 23:16-17,21 (GW) 16  This is what the LORD of Armies says: Don't listen to what the prophets are saying to you. They fill you with false hope. They speak about visions that they dreamed up. These visions are not from the LORD. 17  They keep saying to those who despise me, “The LORD says, ‘Everything will go well for you.'” They tell all who live by their own stubborn ways, Nothing bad will happen to you.” 21  I didn't send these prophets, yet they ran {with their message}. I didn't speak to them, yet they prophesied.

PRAYER: May the flock be wise to the false prophets out there.

Jeremiah 23:29-32 (GW) 29  “Isn't my word like fire or like a hammer that shatters a rock?” asks the LORD. 30  “I'm against the prophets who steal my words from each other,” declares the LORD. 31  “I'm against the prophets who speak their own thoughts and say that they speak for me. 32  I'm against those who prophesy dreams they made up,” declares the LORD. “They tell the dreams they made up and lead my people astray with their lies and their wild talk. I didn't send them or command them to go. They don't help these people at all,” declares the LORD.

PRAYER: Lord, raise up shepherds and prophetic voices that do speak YOUR Word.

Jeremiah 24:6-7 (GW) 6  I will watch over them for their own good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down. I will plant them and not uproot them. 7  I will give them the desire to know that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, because they will wholeheartedly come back to me.

NOTE: the church is to be a place where we BRING them back, BUILD them up,  ROOT them deep, and RELATIONALLY grow strong (with the Lord and with each other).

PRAYER: Lord, may our church be reflective of both your authority and YOUR care.  Help us to be as patient with the backslidden as YOU are with us.

THOT: the Jesus follower will use whatever resources are available (money, time, energy) to reach the lost and the missing.
