MONDAY 3/12/2018

Read: Mark 1:1-8, 1 Cor 1:1-17, Psa 72, Josh 1-2

Mark 1:3 (TEV) 3  Someone is shouting in the desert, 'Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!' "

PRAYER: I need to straighten up a few things in my life to make YOUR stay more pleasant, don’t I?!!

Mark 1:4,8 (TEV) 4  So John appeared in the desert, baptizing and preaching. "Turn away from your sins and be baptized," he told the people, "and God will forgive your sins." … 8  I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

PRAYER: As I clean things up, pour out YOUR Spirit upon me.

1 Corinthians 1:8 (TEV) 8  He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be faultless on the Day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER: I will need YOUR help on this.

1 Corinthians 1:10 (TEV) 10  By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ I appeal to all of you, my friends, to agree in what you say, so that there will be no divisions among you. Be completely united, with only one thought and one purpose.

PRAYER: I pray for the church. May we truly be one.

Psalm 72:12-14 (TEV) 12  He rescues the poor who call to him, and those who are needy and neglected. 13  He has pity on the weak and poor; he saves the lives of those in need. 14  He rescues them from oppression and violence; their lives are precious to him.

PRAYER: May I be a generous and compassionate as YOU.

Joshua 1:5-9 (TEV) 5  Joshua, no one will be able to defeat you as long as you live. I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will always be with you; I will never abandon you. 6  Be determined and confident, for you will be the leader of these people as they occupy this land which I promised their ancestors. 7  Just be determined, be confident; and make sure that you obey the whole Law that my servant Moses gave you. Do not neglect any part of it and you will succeed wherever you go. 8  Be sure that the book of the Law is always read in your worship. Study it day and night, and make sure that you obey everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9  Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the LORD your God, am with you wherever you go."

PRAYER: YOU are with me, YOUR Word directs me daily – so I will be strong and courageous.

THOT: Jesus followers must be wholly devoted to God’s Word and each other.

Read: Mark 1:9-20, 1 Cor 1:18-31, Psa 73, Josh 3-5

Mark 1:11-13 (TEV) 11  And a voice came from heaven, "You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you." 12  At once the Spirit made him go into the desert, 13  where he stayed forty days, being tempted by Satan. Wild animals were there also, but angels came and helped him.

NOTE: Take note that God takes Jesus from the “pleasing” moment to the desert of temptation. It’s not all smooth sailing

PRAYER: I’ll be prepared for whatever the next adventure is, high or low.

Mark 1:15 (TEV) 15  "The right time has come," he said, "and the Kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News!"

PRAYER: Help me to prepare others for YOUR gospel.

Mark 1:17 (TEV) 17  Jesus said to them, "Come with me, and I will teach you to catch people."

PRAYER: I’m following and I’m open to learning how to better share my faith with others.

1 Corinthians 1:18 (TEV) 18  For the message about Christ's death on the cross is nonsense to those who are being lost; but for us who are being saved it is God's power.

PRAYER: Help me to present the gospel in such a way that it will make sense.

1 Corinthians 1:20 (TEV) 20  … God has shown that this world's wisdom is foolishness!
1 Corinthians 1:23 (TEV) 23  As for us, we proclaim the crucified Christ, a message that is offensive to the Jews and nonsense to the Gentiles;

1 Corinthians 1:26-29,31 (TEV) 26  Now remember what you were, my friends, when God called you. From the human point of view few of you were wise or powerful or of high social standing. 27  God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and he chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful. 28  He chose what the world looks down on and despises and thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is important. 29  This means that no one can boast in God's presence. …31  So then, as the scripture says, "Whoever wants to boast must boast of what the Lord has done."

PRAYER: Use me to reach the powerful and wise. And my I be encouraging to those other “weak” vessels YOU might choose to spread the Good News.

1 Corinthians 1:30 (TEV) 30  But God has brought you into union with Christ Jesus, and God has made Christ to be our wisdom. By him we are put right with God; we become God's holy people and are set free.

Psalm 73:2-3,21-24 (TEV) 2  But I had nearly lost confidence; my faith was almost gone 3  because I was jealous of the proud when I saw that things go well for the wicked. .. 21  When my thoughts were bitter and my feelings were hurt, 22  I was as stupid as an animal; I did not understand you. 23  Yet I always stay close to you, and you hold me by the hand. 24  You guide me with your instruction and at the end you will receive me with honor.

PRAYER: I too get dumb, so I thank YOU for being so patient with me.  I’m hangin’ on!

Psalm 73:16-17 (TEV) 16  I tried to think this problem through, but it was too difficult for me 17  until I went into your Temple. Then I understood ….

PRAYER: YOUR word is certainly a blessing but so is YOUR House.  May many people find huge answers this coming weekend.

Psalm 73:25 (TEV) 25  What else do I have in heaven but you? Since I have you, what else could I want on earth?

PRAYER: YOU are my treasure.  Earth is not my home.

Joshua 3:10 (TEV) 10  As you advance, he will surely drive out the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. You will know that the living God is among you

PRAYER: YOU are the Living God!

Joshua 3:14,16-17 (TEV) 14  ... As soon as the priests stepped into the river, … 16  the water stopped flowing and piled up, far upstream at Adam,  …and the people were able to cross over near Jericho. 17  While the people walked across on dry ground, the priests carrying the LORD'S Covenant Box stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until all the people had crossed over.
Joshua 4:23-24 (TEV) 23  Tell them that the LORD your God dried up the water of the Jordan for you until you had crossed, just as he dried up the Red Sea for us. 24  Because of this everyone on earth will know how great the LORD'S power is, and you will honor the LORD your God forever."

PRAYER: Yep, that’s a big deal.

Joshua 5:11-12 (TEV) 11  The next day was the first time they ate food grown in Canaan: roasted grain and bread made without yeast. 12  The manna stopped falling then, and the Israelites no longer had any. From that time on they ate food grown in Canaan.

PRAYER: Sometimes I miss the manna moments (YOU know, when YOU baby me along). But I appreciate this new place YOU’ve brought me to.

THOT: Real believers aren’t necessarily very impressive nor smart, but they are blessed and empowered by a Living God who loves them dearly. That’s preachable.

WEDNESDAY 3/14/2018

Read: Mark 1:21-34, 1 Cor 2, Psa 74, Josh 6-7

Mark 1:22,27-28 (TEV) 22  The people who heard him were amazed at the way he taught, for he wasn't like the teachers of the Law; instead, he taught with authority. … 27  … This man has authority to give orders to the evil spirits, and they obey him!" 28  And so the news about Jesus spread quickly everywhere in the province of Galilee.

PRAYER: Authority to teach, Authority to change lives.  That’s preachable too!

Mark 1:31 (TEV) 31  He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to wait on them.

PRAYER: Yeah, I can be so lazy.  Pete’s mom is an inspiration.  No more excuses from me.

Mark 1:34 (TEV) 34  Jesus healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases and drove out many demons. ….

NOTE: Not all problems were resolved by the end of the day, even for Jesus.

PRAYER: May I be satisfied to get done what I can today.  I will however make a good effort.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (TEV) 1  When I came to you, my friends, to preach God's secret truth, I did not use big words and great learning. 2  For while I was with you, I made up my mind to forget everything except Jesus Christ and especially his death on the cross. 3  So when I came to you, I was weak and trembled all over with fear, 4  and my teaching and message were not delivered with skillful words of human wisdom, but with convincing proof of the power of God's Spirit. 5  Your faith, then, does not rest on human wisdom but on God's power.

PRAYER: May YOU, and not clever words or theatrical performances, be the rock upon which tomorrows church is built.

1 Corinthians 2:10 (TEV) 10  But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes.

PRAYER: So I could use a little of YOUR Holy Spirit’s guidance.

1 Corinthians 2:16 (TEV) 16  As the scripture says, "Who knows the mind of the Lord? Who is able to give him advice?" We, however, have the mind of Christ.

Psalm 74:12 (TEV) 12  But you have been our king from the beginning, O God; you have saved us many times.

PRAYER: Many many times, Thank YOU!

Psalm 74:20-21 (TEV) 20  Remember the covenant you made with us. There is violence in every dark corner of the land. 21  Don't let the oppressed be put to shame; let those poor and needy people praise you.

PRAYER: I’ll be patient, I know our day is coming.

Joshua 6:16 (TEV) 16  The seventh time around, when the priests were about to sound the trumpets, Joshua ordered the people to shout, and he said, "The LORD has given you the city!

PRAYER: I’d just like it if the church were so loud on the “seventh day” that the whole city stopped to pay homage to YOU. May this coming weekend be a blessing to YOU.

Joshua 6:27 (TEV) 27  So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread through the whole country.

PRAYER: May we be known for our strong relationship with YOU.  May I be known for that!

Joshua 7:11-12 (TEV) 11  Israel has sinned! They have broken the agreement with me that I ordered them to keep. They have taken some of the things condemned to destruction. They stole them, lied about it, and put them with their own things. 12  This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They retreat from them because they themselves have now been condemned to destruction! I will not stay with you any longer unless you destroy the things you were ordered not to take!

NOTE: “Israel has sinned” actually it was just Achan, but since we are a family.  Thousands of people lost God’s favor and died. The nation of Israel experienced defeat.  The strongest chain is limited by it’s weakest link. So fix the weak ones!

PRAYER: Lord, help us to hold one another responsible and to build one another up in YOU.

THOT: a Jesus follower is always active, sharing, caring, and building up other believers who may have a weak moment.

THURSDAY 3/15/2018

Read: Mark 1:35-45, 1 Cor 3, Psa 75, Josh 8-9

Mark 1:35 (TEV) 35  Very early the next morning, long before daylight, Jesus got up and left the house. He went out of town to a lonely place, where he prayed.

PRAYER: If the King of Kings needs this private prayer time, what about me, right?!!!

Mark 1:40-41 (TEV) 40  A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. "IF YOU WANT TO," he said, "you can make me clean." 41  Jesus was filled with pity, and reached out and touched him. "I DO WANT TO," he answered. "Be clean!"

PRAYER: I love how willing YOU are to help me.  May I be as willing to help “the untouchables” (those whom everyone else avoids).

Mark 1:45 (TEV) 45  But the man went away and began to spread the news everywhere. Indeed, he talked so much that Jesus could not go into a town publicly. Instead, he stayed out in lonely places, and people came to him from everywhere.

NOTE: Funny, Jesus tells us not to witness, we do.  Jesus commands us to witness, we don’t.  Why is that?

PRAYER: Lord, I think we need more help with sharing our faith than we do keeping it to ourselves.   Guide us, empower us to witness.

1 Corinthians 3:3-4 (TEV) 3  because you still live as the people of this world live. When there is jealousy among you and you quarrel with one another, doesn't this prove that you belong to this world, living by its standards? 4  When one of you says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos"—aren't you acting like worldly people?

PRAYER: Help me to break with the ways of the world and to mature in YOU.

1 Corinthians 3:6 (TEV) 6  I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow.

1 Corinthians 3:9-15 (TEV) 9  … You are also God's building. 10  … But each of you must be careful how you build. 11  For God has already placed Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation, and no other foundation can be laid. 12  Some will use gold or silver or precious stones in building on the foundation; others will use wood or grass or straw. 13  And the quality of each person's work will be seen when the Day of Christ exposes it. For on that Day fire will reveal everyone's work; the fire will test it and show its real quality. 14  If what was built on the foundation survives the fire, the builder will receive a reward. 15  But if your work is burnt up, then you will lose it; but you yourself will be saved, as if you had escaped through the fire.

PRAYER: YOU deserve better from me.

1 Corinthians 3:18 (TEV) 18  You should not fool yourself. If any of you think that you are wise by this world's standards, you should become a fool, in order to be really wise.

1 Corinthians 3:21,23 (TEV) 21  No one, then, should boast about what human beings can do. Actually everything belongs to you: ….  23  and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

PRAYER: It’s all YOUR’s not just my stuff, but me and everything I’ve made.

Psalm 75:1 (TEV) 1   We give thanks to you, O God, we give thanks to you! We proclaim how great you are and tell of the wonderful things you have done.

PRAYER: And not just on Sundays.  May we boldly share YOU in the marketplace.

Psalm 75:7 (TEV) 7  it is God who is the judge, condemning some and acquitting others.

PRAYER: I’ll try to leave that job up to YOU and YOU alone.

Joshua 8:18 (TEV) 18  Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Point your spear at Ai; I am giving it to you." Joshua did as he was told,

PRAYER: May I be as obedient to YOUR Word.

Joshua 8:34 (TEV) 34  Joshua then read aloud the whole Law, including the blessings and the curses, just as they are written in the book of the Law.

PRAYER: yes, I’m reading the good stuff and the hard to read stuff too.

Joshua 9:14 (TEV) 14  The Israelites accepted some food from them, but did not consult the LORD about it.

PRAYER: How many times have I done something without YOUR approval because it “seemed right”.  Forgive me.

THOT: Jesus followers need daily connections in prayer and in God’s Word to be able to make a positive difference in this world.

FRIDAY 3/16/2018

Read: Mark 2:1-12, 1 Cor 4, Psa 76, Josh 10-12

Mark 2:5 (TEV) 5  Seeing how much faith they had, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "My son, your sins are forgiven."

PRAYER: May my faith be seen in my actions.  And may my actions result in good for others and glory for YOU.

Mark 2:9-10 (TEV) 9  Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, pick up your mat, and walk'? 10  I will prove to you, then, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the paralyzed man,

PRAYER: Sometimes I think the forgiveness thing is the bigger deal.  Anyway, I appreciate mine!

1 Corinthians 4:3,5 (TEV) 3  Now, I am not at all concerned about being judged by you or by any human standard; I don't even pass judgment on myself…. 5  So you should not pass judgment on anyone before the right time comes. Final judgment must wait until the Lord comes; he will bring to light the dark secrets and expose the hidden purposes of people's minds. And then all will receive from God the praise they deserve.

PRAYER: YOU are the judge, mine and I’ll let YOU be in charge of others.

1 Corinthians 4:12-13 (TEV) 12  we wear ourselves out with hard work. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; 13  when we are insulted, we answer back with kind words. We are no more than this world's garbage; we are the scum of the earth to this very moment!

PRAYER: Scum to others, heirs to YOU.  May I respond to other’s with YOUR love.

1 Corinthians 4:16 (TEV) 16  I beg you, then, to follow my example.

PRAYER: And I will be an exemplary example

1 Corinthians 4:20 (TEV) 20  For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of words but of power.

Psalm 76:11-12 (TEV) 11  Give the LORD your God what you promised him; bring gifts to him, all you nearby nations. God makes everyone fear him; 12  he humbles proud princes and terrifies great kings.

PRAYER: I appreciate YOU and certainly stand in awe of YOU.

Joshua 10:8 (TEV) 8  The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them. I have already given you the victory. Not one of them will be able to stand against you."

Joshua 10:25 (TEV) 25  Then Joshua said to his officers, "Don't be afraid or discouraged. Be determined and confident …."

NOTE: Josh is now sharing with others the same Word God gave to him.

PRAYER: Lord, may I take YOUR Word and breed enthusiasm and devotion in others.

Joshua 11:4,8 (TEV) 4  They came with all their soldiers—an army with as many men as there are grains of sand on the seashore. They also had many horses and chariots. … 8  The LORD gave the Israelites victory over them; ….

PRAYER: Stats don’t bother YOU do they!?!!

Joshua 11:23 (TEV) 23  Joshua captured the whole land, as the LORD had commanded Moses. Joshua gave it to the Israelites as their own and divided it into portions, one for each tribe. So the people rested from war.

PRAYER: That “rested from war” sounds great but I understand that if only follows complete obedience.  Got it!

THOT: God can and does respond to people’s faith however rich or poor, known or unknown, privileged or poor.
