Community Prayer Board Introduction

Prayer is a powerful tool.  We should not view it simply as a wish list, or even moreso, as a personal demand that our needs be met.  It is, instead, a means of worship and praise, much akin to tithing.  "Worship" literally means bending one's knee in reverence to God.  In practice, worship involves those attitudes and actions in which we dedicate and devote ourselves to God in respect and honor.  In tithing, we worship God by giving back to God our best, first.  We are acknowledgeing God as the Sovereign Lord and  the source of all blessings.  In prayer, we are dedicating and devoting ourselves to speaking with our Sovereign Lord, God.  What an amazing privilege!

As we approach God in this conversational worship known as prayer, we would like to encourage you to share your praises as well as your concerns. As Eugene Peterson puts it in the paraphrase "The Message":

"Don't fret or worry.  Instead of worrying, pray.  Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns.  Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down.  It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life." Phil. 4:6,7

As stated by the person who is the main impetus behind the creation of this Community Prayer Board, "In spite of whatever situation we find ourselves in, we should be able to think of at least one thing to praise and thank him for.  Having a hard time with that because your circumstances seem so bleak?  In spite of anything going on in your life, Jesus is but a prayer away.  He is the Light of the world.  So don’t forget to praise Him!"

There are three parts to this prayer Board.

1. PRAISES: to the Light of the World.

2. PRAYERS: Light a Candle for new concerns here

3. DON’T FORGET: Keep the Candle Burning for ongoing prayer requests.

Connections:

This is an opportunity to express praises, needs, concerns to one another for prayer which will result in a closer relationship within our church body.  This might give folks who want to be involved at a distance an opportunity to develop a kinship with someone going through a situation that they have already experienced.  It may open up doors of healing for that person as well as the person in need.

Site Development Comments

Just a few comments as we, Salem, begin our journey into using technology to better serve our community prayer needs.  The site, in its present form, has been developed using a content management system (CMS) known as Joomla.  This choice was made because an individual developer, Mike Leeper, had already put together a package he calls "PrayerCenter."  This Joomla component, as it's known in the Land of the Geeks, has much of the functionality we desire for Salem's Community Prayer Board.  Thanks Mike.  To program a site such as this requires a considerable amount of time and effort.  We have tweaked a few parts of Mike's efforts to meet our functionality goals for the Salem Community.  More "tweaks" will be forthcoming as we become more familiar with Mike's efforts as well as Joomla in general.  For example, one specific functionality goal is to allow folks to email a "prayer requestor" directly in response to a particular prayer posting.  However, we would like to have this to be able to occur without the responder seeing or knowing the prayer requestor's identity or email address.  We haven't quite figured that one out yet.  There are several other items which came out of ministry meetings and they will continue to be explored.  If you have suggestions for the site, please feel free to email them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Thanks for your patience as we develop this very important ministry for the Salem Community.
